(CBS) CBS News has learned that the family of the octuplets born this week outside Los Angeles filed for bankruptcy and abandoned a home a little over a year-and-a-half ago.
Early Show national correspondent Hattie Kauffman says the mother is in her mid-thirties and lives with her parents.
There's been no mention of the octuplets' father, Kauffman observes.
The grandfather, she adds, is apparently going to head back to his native Iraq to earn money for the growing family. He told CBS News he's a former Iraqi military man.

Just lovely, isn’t it?
What exactly, is a “former Iraqi Military Man”?
Why is a mother, who already has 6 kids, taking fertility drugs?
This story is just loaded with suspicion...all around!!
Not that we have any right to invade a person’s privacy but what we DO know sure is strange at the very least...
We do have a right to invade someone’s privacy if the taxpayers end up paying for 14 kids.
Especially when there is no father around.
What I’d like to know is this - Who is the doctor that performed the IVF? Unlessof course, she didn’t have IVF and was taking fertility drugs herself, which she could have bought online from a Mexican pharmacy, hyper-ovulated, and conceived all these babies.
Probably because the State paid for it. No, wait, strike that. Silly me. Pelosi wants less babies by any means available in order to curb gubmint spending......
This is the kind of story I have no interest in—I have been seeing the headlines about the eight babies, the previous six, and so on—and it’s puzzled me. I couldn’t figure out why the press were so interested in this beyond a one-day story. That’s why the stories about their having six REALLY activated the radar—isn’t that something they’d know from the start? Why are they prolonging this story?
Reading this, it fell on me like a safe out of a window. They’re the new Joe the Plumber—ordinary folks who need to be stomped on for whatever reason.
That’s what I want to know?? Besides the crazy parents, what doctor goes ahead with the treatment.
I wondered if the family surname “suleman” was more like “Suleiman” from the ROP.
to gather resources from the government?? This whole thing stinks!!!!
Yes, you have a valid point. ....and it appears the Government is going to pay! Not only that is she even here legally?
14 illegitimate kids, the last 8 born to a welfare mama using fertility drugs- is not “ordinary folks”
The folks in Watts have to be saying- 8 at once? DAY-UM, girl!
I might not be able to afford kids myself, but that’s okay...I have been paying for many kids, for many years.
Then again, that’s a big reason why I couldn’t afford them myself.
Who paid for the expensive fertility drugs and IVF? /rhetorical question
Snort! The quintessential (or is it "octoessntial?) welfare brood mare....

This story is about irresponsible people. The doctor who implanted 8 embryo’s, a woman who is on welfare along with her kids.
I love kids, but this is absurd.
Someone that used to be in the Iraqi military? Just a guess
