I’ll betcha the farm that wasn’t a legally owned pistol. Any idea what the requirements are for pistol ownership in Ill.? I’m guessing it’s probably as draconian as NJ.

This, of course, could all be a lie from kids who were up to no good and got shot in the process. The whole “guy falls on ice and shoots me” thing could be made up to hide a gang-related shooting, or perhaps they tried to rob the wrong guy.

“Hey, Bananna-heels! How’s the weather down there? Chortle, chortle, guffaw!!” (Everyone in group laughs appreciatively).

Blam!! Blam, blam, blam!!

“Aw, man!! (cries from prone position, clutching leg) You didn’t have to shoot me in the ankle!!”

“You wanted to know how the weather was down here. Just thought I’d oblige you.” (blows smoke from business-end of 9mm Glock).

I guess the writer thought it wasn’t much of a story either which is why he made the headline appears as if it was a multiple shooting.

Somehow you Yanks need to arrive at a reasonable balance: how to make sure those folk who are smart enough to carry guns can always do so without government interference, balanced against keeping guns out of the hands of knuckleheads and crims.

Given that this was, apparently, suburban Chicago, there is a high likelihood that the gun was possessed illegally.

Yep... noticed that. Also noticed the writer did not lend his/her/its name to the story.

“...a man wearing dark clothing.”

Gotta watch those “dark clothes wearing” people.

They are always trouble.

Good catch! You may be right.

Some teens knocked furiously on my parents' door one day, yelling for help when one of them had been stabbed. My parents called 911, and while waiting, asked the teens what had happened. All of them swore the stabbing had occurred in an argument over a girl, but my folks would not fall for it. They said they could tell they were lying. The neighborhood had become notorious for drug dealing, and my folks believed it must've been a drug deal gone bad.

Clear example of someone who should not have a firearm.

I'm sure if they find him he won't have a gun for long.

I won’t if you won’t

> This is the price we pay for legal guns. It’s damn well worth it.

I wonder whether your tune would change if you were the guy shot in the ankle. I bet it would, in a heart-beat.

I bet it would change even faster if this clown had shot your daughter in the chest instead.

Having clowns playing with guns is lots of fun and well worth he price of admission, until somebody close to you gets shot by one.

Not draconian at all. Buy a pistol, put it in your pocket. No law known can control that. Cook county just stiffened up handgun laws, but the rest of the state is just waiting periods/background checks. No registration, no carry. Owners are registered, not the guns, outside Cook county.

The only thing wrong with this story is that the guy used a gun instead of walking over and popping someone in the mouth. I know this story is supposed to be a piece on why guns are so bad, but I can't help but think that a good part of the reason that our society has become so crude is because people aren't made to pay anymore when they act like a-holes. In fact, the law seems to be designed to allow a-holes to run free.

In the old days, the laughers would have gotten a punch in the mouth, and no cop would blame him. In the real old days, the laugher would have gotten slapped and challenged to a duel to the death at dawn, and no cop would blame anyone. In the real real old days, the laugher would have just gotten run through with a blade, or clubbed on the head.

I suppose my point is that we take for granted that the least physically aggressive behavior is the most civilized, but that is not always true. I think in order to have a truly civilized society, there must be a certain amount of respect that people have for each other largely borne on the fear of injury or death. When that fear is removed, cowards and criminals, who are often the same thing, feel free to run wild. As Heinlein put it: "An armed society is a polite society."

It’s a strange law they have in Chicago, one that I’ve never understood. Suburban Chicago would be one place where I would have thought it made sense for responsible citizens to have Concealed Carry. I’ve been to Chicago many times, and it is a city custom-made for guns.

Yet you can’t: not legally anyway. Unless you are a cop or a connected Council worker (the latter makes no sense at all, but apparently it is so).

My first thought was...was the demon alcohol involved? Then I reread the article and was irritated at the use of the term ‘gunman’ as if the man was walking around looking for people to shoot :(

I don’t know who Heinlein is, but you have a great point there. I don’t dig what the guy did any more than some of the other folks here, but the callous attitude of the mockers is indicative of society as a whole. Are we going to be a part of the Old West, or are we going to be a society of Barbarians? I know which one I would chose because at least there was some justice in town in the Old West.
