Talk about a do-over: the Yo-Yo Ma-Itzhak Perlman string sync
LA Times ^ | 01/2009

They're calling it the great musical cover-up, news that Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman and the rest of their Inauguration Day ensemble pre-recorded their music for fear that cold temperatures would force their instruments out of tune.

The renowned musicians did play live -- but only those closest could hear it, and that probably didn't include President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama or their daughters, Malia and Sasha.

The Ticket has to say, they did sound marvelous.

I don't know about violins and cellos, but when I bring my Gibson Hummingbird acoustic guitar out in the cold it'll definitely go out of tune. ...but then all I have to do is re-tune and I'm good to go. If violins/cellos are similar, Yitzhak and Yo Yo would've had plenty of time to tune up to the weather conditions.

It’s not only the tuning. Playing a multi million $$$ Stradivarius violin or cello in sub freezing temps could destroy the instrument. It’s also pretty difficult to play with numb fingers.

The piece was recorded the previous day by all those who actually performed it. This is much ado about nothing.

I'm not getting too exorcised over the bait-and-switch and subsequent cover-up by Yo Yo and the Yo Yos.

IMO, the musical work they played was unmemorable for the occasion even though written by another musical icon.

The composition was a lightweight "chamber piece', a descriptive phrase which aptly describes the entire three-day Immaculation proceedings.
