I need help being a suck-up

I need to suck-up to my boss.

He is a scotch drinker. I know nothing about scotch.

What can I purchase for him that will really impress him?

My general feeling is that you don't, as a novice, attempt to buy a wine expert - wine. As a corollary, I would recommend you don't buy him Scotch...but perhaps something closely related you might know something about - be it whisky, vodka, etc.

A good scotch drinker probably likes other things as well. Like B&B or another.

Look here Glenn, the first rule of being a suck-up is NOT looking like a suck up. What do you think giving Scotch looks like?

Use your brain - buy the guy a cigar, and one for yourself. Never met a scotch drinker who didn’t like a good smoke with it.

You haven’t tried Laphroiag, have you? It’s over the top. Very distracting.

I’d never spoil a good scotch by cutting it with water. Some are best seasoned over ice, and some neat. Neither works with Laphroiag, which tastes like it was strained through burnt potting soil.

Blech. Expensive blech at that.

All those listed are good: Macallan's, Oban, Glenfiddich.

I'll add: Glenlivet, Laphroaig.

But if you're going total suck-up, Johnnie Walker Blue is an express ticket. Gold and are good, too.

Get two bottles. One of a good blended scotch, like Dewar's. The second should be a nice single malt scotch, like Glenfiddich. Tell him you didn't know which he prefers, so you hope he enjoys them both. When he says you spent too much, tell him not to worry as you have a friend in the biz. He will like that. Do not get a really expensive brand. Spend too much and he will think you are stupid, a pathetic suck-up or overpaid -- or maybe all three.

Hi Scotch is that horrible tasting stuff,like drinking gasoline. Old Bushmills is the best. Cannot find Old anymore so I have to go for Bushmills...Great Irish Bourbon...My daddy use to say (God rest his soul) “Only drink Scotch, Bourbon or Rye. Everything else is rot gut and kill you quick. He was a scotch man.

The good news is that these days, there is much quality to choose from. Here are some choice brands:

Laphroaig: This 10-year single malt from the Islay region of Scotland ranks high on the scale of many critics. Wait 14 days. I'll submit the recipe for a proper blend of the supplied Scotches.

Then you can go and supply your boss with a proper blend.
