WASHINGTON (AP) In his final acts of clemency, President George W. Bush on Monday commuted the prison sentences of two former U.S. Border Patrol agents whose convictions for shooting a Mexican drug dealer ignited fierce debate about illegal immigration.
Bush's decision to commute the sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who tried to cover up the shooting, was welcomed by both Republican and Democratic members of Congress. They had long argued that the agents were merely doing their jobs, defending the American border against criminals. They also maintained that the more than 10-year prison sentences the pair was given were too harsh.

President Bush should NEVER have prosecuted them. The prosecutor was specially picked by Bush and this reflects Bush’s desire to “play ball” with the Mexican Government who was calling for action. They saw this as an act to close our borders, i.e., enforce our laws. This was NOT Bush’s finest hour, as reflected in a commutation vs a pardon.
Georgie you come up short again...
I don't know about anybody else, but if I was an employer in that area, I would bend over backwards to see to it that these men had good jobs. The idea that they will be "marked" by their experience and that no one would hire them would only apply if a business owner were a leftist democrat.
Bush did the right thing. If they had not tried to cover up what they had done and were convicted, they should have been pardoned. As it is, shooting the guy shouldn’t have gotten them fired. Hiding evidence and trying to cover up what they did is not excusable. Commutable, but not pardonable...
Once again, Bush makes the right call.
Great news!!!
Bush surprised me!
“Bush surprised me!”
I’m not surprised. I was expecting this. Prayers are answered. Thank God.
But what about Scooter Libby who has been completely screwed over?
From what I understand from the article on Fox News, a pardon is typically requested 5 years after the prison term has ended. Since these guys are getting out in March, they’ll have to request a full pardon from President Palin.
Thank you God!
Thank you Mr. President!
Please pray they remain safe until they are out of that place.
My sentiments exactly.
That would be great.
Good news.
When "W" was firing prosecutors for being screw-ups he somehow overlooked Sutton.
We won't forget Sutton ~ he's out of politics RIGHT NOW FOREVER.
Wonderful news. :o)
Thank you, President Bush!!!
I knew he’d do it.
thank you for the common sense response. :o)
The first time I ever heard about this case, I knew something had gone terribly wrong with the country. Bush’s failure until now to release them merely confirmed my worst suspicions.
thanks for that added info!
Oh, wait, that was Clinton and will be Obama. Well, hide the kids, the moral deviates are back in charge.
An article on Breitbart said it would take about two months for them to be released after this.
Is this true, and if so, why does it take so long?
