Taxes on imported goods?

I'm curious about something: If you were to buy about $50,000 worth of building materials from a Canadian company and had them trucked down to your building site in the state of Washington, would you be liable for Washington state taxes, duties or tariffs of any sort?

Probably ARE ... dunno about Construction Materials, but most states have a tax on “Items purchased out of State”. My Comradeship (state) has a whole form for it .. sales tax for catalog and internet purchases.

They’ll find a way to send out a form of Gestapo to enforce it, now that they’re not getting as much revenue,

Seems easy enough.

I think you can legally bring in 400.00 dollars a person each month.. duty free, so you would be limited on the amount you can bring in the country..

“Try buying the stuff and not telling anyone.”

Truth be told— that’s what I did. The state ordered the Canadian materials company to hand over their client list and I’ve been slapped with a bill.

I’m an idiot and had no idea to expect a state tax on this stuff. Oh well.

In TN, it’s the “use” part of the sales and use tax. If you buy any non-exempt item, you’re reponsible for the sales tax if you don’t pay it at the time of purchase.

They audit businesses, but they don’t enforce it much on individual’s purchases , because they can’t track it.

$50,000 of goods, they might find a way to track.

Hmmm... There has to be a way around this. I'm all for avoiding taxes whenever possible, especially when there is little risk of being caught and prosecuted. I know people(cough) that make good money in their trade, on the 'side', away from official work. Cash only please. :p I believe it's a noble thing, and the essence of freedom.

You know there is a reason we ship raw logs from BC to the USA right?

Finished lumber get a bill slapped on it... raw logs don’t...

Like I said, I was an idiot— had I known this was going to come back and bite me, I’d have at least inquired as to the possibility of doing this transaction off the books.

Live and learn.
