Hoarder Dies After Becoming Lost in Maze of His Own Trash
Fox ^ | Jan 8, 2009 | Sun UK

An eccentric loner in Britain hoarded so much trash he had to burrow through it to get around his home — then got lost in the maze of tunnels Friday and died of thirst.

Human mole Gordon Stewart, 74, had filled his rooms up to the ceiling with 10 years’ worth of garbage and clutter, making it impossible to walk around.

plastic bread bags?

I save'm all.

I use one to stuff the others inside. When it's full, our local humane society gets them.

They use then in poopy bag dispensors placed around town, instead of paying for the overpriced ones.

As for plastic grocery bags, when one of them is full of others, it goes to the collection box at the store; they recycle them.

Jelly jars? Nah; we don't eat enough jelly, but if there's a jar that looks right, I might take it out to the barn to put the bent screws or rusty nails in it, until I need them. *<];-')

Oh, they know not to get rid of it - plus, my brother and sister probably have a few of theirs mixed in, and my sister at least would throw a fit if anything was done with any of them without a chance for us to all sit down and sort them out properly and possibly trade (my grandmother’s memory was starting to slip, so we have as many as five of the same animal). Not that there’s much money in it, as they weren’t collector’s items to us, they were toys, and got played with and cuddled and thrown across the room at each other (they were the best things to throw at annoying siblings - heavy enough that you could aim well, and soft enough that they wouldn’t cause serious injury) on a surprisingly frequent basis so some are in pretty bad shape, but they’ve still got lots of sentimental value.

After all was said and done, I realized that I should have upon arriving at her house in the first place and seeing that she could not take even one step without grunting loudly in terrible discomfort, I should have immediately told her she was in no shape to have any kind of surgery instead of just ASKING her IF she was sure she felt up to going. Owning up to having bitten off more than I can chew has always been difficult for me. I can usually gut it out. - It’s a win-win situation for her; now she can demonize and blame me for “knocking her out of getting her surgery” and doesn’t have to take any responsibility for opting out. - In fact, she became so abusive to me that I finally had to just get out of the awful traffic and out of “her” car and rent myself a motel room for the night while she took her car back home. I then had to call my husband from out of town to come pick me up and then drive an extra hour to her house to pick up my vehicle. She flatly TOLD me that everything was going to be done HER WAY period and I realized then that she had finagled to get me into driving her van with the pretense (I think) of “not being able to get into my van”. I think I did finally learn that it is futile to try to reason with spoiled and unreasonable people. Like trying to bathe a cat; it scratches you, you don’t really get the cat clean, and the cat ends up hating you. . or put another way, “No good deed goes unpunished” when dealing with an irrational person with their own agenda. I kept trying to tell her, once I found that she had been giving me incorrect addresses, that there was no way I could have driven around Huntsville, Alabama without at least knowing the correct street and find the place. SHE had made the reservations and knew what street the place was on - not me. As it was, at first I drove for two and a half hours in Huntsville, in horrible traffic, in road construction areas on the chance that I might accidentally find it. - Oh well, live and learn.

When we cleaned out my grandmother’s kitchen, we found EVERY rubber band, twist tie, bread tie, toothpick, used birthday candle, plastic sack, etc., that she had ever had.

I was always amazed by the fact that her apartment’s “trash can” was a small white paper bag that had carried her last quart of milk home. She threw nothing away, and brought almost nothing in.

I’ve known one compulsive hoarder and have been in their house. Interesting to say the least. There’s another who lives a block away from me, the local paper has actually done an article on her.

I had a compulsive hoarder neighbor once, and it's amazing QVC survived after her death.

She bought literally tons of things while watching the home shopping network, but she never opened the boxes. Boxes were piled from the floor to near the ceiling of her 4 bedroom home. There were narrow trails leading through all the boxes, and it's a good thing for her that she didn't have claustrophobia.

Everyone tried to help her, but she wasn't legally insane, she just liked it that way.

After her death from a heart attack, her relatives held the mother of all lawn sales for 3 days.

Why in the world do people make assumptions like those in this article - saying that he got lost... They couldn’t POSSIBLY know that he was “lost”, and didn’t perhaps lose consciousness for some other reason leading to his death...

Sorry - just a pet peeve I guess...

Another thing that just occurred to me... There is a difference between a real “hoarder” or “pack-rat” and someone who builds tunnels of “Rotting garbage” as is alleged in this article...

Believe it or not, a bunch of the old gear beloved by enthusiasts were, get this - built by women. Production lines w/ American Beauty soldering irons, factories employed a bunch of folks, and paid good wages. Nobody, even thought about unionizing, because of that, believe it or not!
