Top dog and cat names of 2008
PMSNBC ^ | 1/7/09

Move over, Fluffy and Fido. There's a new batch of pet names in town: "people" names! Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), the nation's largest and oldest provider of pet health insurance, scoured its database of more than 466,000 insured pets to find the most popular dog and cat names of 2008. (Animals not insured by VPI were not included in the survey.)

But for those who like to think outside the (litter) box, VPI also came up with a list of unusual pet names, like Meatwad and Miss Fuzzbutt. The company's employees selected 50 unusual dog names and 50 unusual cat names, and then voted for the top 10 in each category. See which names were up to snuff.

We have Linsey Lou and Sneakers. AKA Puppy-Lou and Kitty-Lou. The cat almost got named ‘Cracker”, but we thought better of it.

My cat is the same way in his old age. Constantly nagging about something,, let him, let him out, more treats, open the blinds, open the door, let me out at 5:30am, let me out at 10:30 pm, move the pillows, etc etc,,,
And oh yeah,,, pick up my vomit/hairball I left in the hallway before you slip on it again... (funny story actually)
I love my cat!

My baby (that passed away in October) was a choc. lab golden retriever mix named Ed.

We got a new girl last month, a husky/something mix. She is a year old, and named Yenta. We had to google the name (she came with the name) and it is Yiddish for gossip, or bigmouth. Fits her perfectly when she starts barking!

Named my Chessie “Boomer”. The GSD I adopted was already named [on his license] “Dieter”. Call him “Dietz”.

I had a friend who named her cat Noogie Ann. Always sort of liked it.

That’s funny, growing up we had a cat named “Fat Mike”. I didn’t know it was common.

RIP India a.k.a. "Kitty"...always so hard and sad to lose them.

At least I'm sure she had a good long life, and I'm pretty sure there is "cat heaven" (I know there's dog heaven, so I'll make a leap of faith here...how could it be "heaven" otherwise?)!

My Boxer’s name is Django.

But, I nicknamed him “Big Doofus” years ago. Over time the nicknamed has been truncated down to “Boofus.”

I’ve long believed that cats shouldn’t be named, but merely numbered.

Target 1, Target 2, Target 3.............

I've always named my cats quicky - within the first few minutes of meeting them. Then later in life I got married and when it was time for new cats, I realized the naming thing was a JOINT effort now. It took us a couple weeks IIRC - searching the internet, making lists, endless debates. I don't know how we could ever have named kids if we'd had them! It was stressful!

We settled on Caspar (after Cap Weinberger who had passed away a few weeks before) and Lara (from my favorite movie, Dr Zhivago).

I think you're right and this verse is why I think that way.

Ecclesiastes 3:19 (King James Version)
19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.

LOL. You reminded me a little of the comedian Steven Wright:

“If toast always lands butter-side down, and cats always land on their feet, what happens if you strap toast on the back of a cat and drop it?”
