AMD Shanghai Opteron CPUs On Linux

Last quarter AMD

introduced their "Shanghai" Opteron processors that join the ranks of Intel's Harpertown Xeon CPUs that are 45nm quad-core server/workstation parts. Initial reviews of these new AMD Opteron processors have been very positive, but how do these chips perform with Linux? In this article we have our hands on a few of the fastest Shanghais, the AMD Opteron 2384 clocked at 2.7GHz, as we see how well they compare to the older "Barcelona" Opteron processors.

Highly unfortunate that they didn’t include a quad-core Intel CPU in the mix.

The new AMD CPUs look promising though, competition is always good.

Looks good, but not a huge improvement. Phenom II will be released soon. Should have similar improvements?

Linux is certainly available on many new models of PCs here in Shanghai; seems to be gaining popularity.

Our 17 year old son just bought himself a new Acer notebook with nothing on it and installed Linux on it himself. Appears to be working great. Worked wonderfully on 1G of RAM and he then upgraded to 3G and the thing really flies. The graphics are tremendous!

I may dump my MS and let him load Linux on my units.

So which Distro is he running and did he have any trouble with the specifics of the internal laptop hardware?

...like wireless,..sound,..graphics...that is a usual problem area,....and it varies by which distro is used,....

I was able to install the latest Ubuntu distro on a rather obscure old laptop (Medion), with a third party Wifi adapter I installed myself.

It installed without a hitch, I was very impressed.

Leaked Slide Confirms AMD 45nm Deneb CPUs at CES 2009

A recently revealed slide showing AMD’s CPU roadmap indicates that the Sunnyvale-based chip maker is bound to release its first 45nm-manufactured quad-core Phenom processors as soon as January 2009. The slide appears to confirm recent rumors, according to which AMD plans to release the first 45nm desktop processors, codenamed Deneb, at next year’s CES show, which will debut on January 8.

 

The leaked slide has been uploaded on the Spanish-language Chw Forum and, besides confirming the 2009 release of the 45nm Deneb processors, it also details closer-to-release Brisbane, Toliman and Lima CPUs. According to it, the company will release the Athlon X2 5050e Brisbane processor on October 8, along with the triple-core Phenom X3 8850 Toliman processor. November will bring the release of single-core and dual-core low power CPUs.

Here I'm using NX to run a remote desktop into Linux from Windows. It's very nice (even across the Internet), and the perfect way to slowly migrate towards Linux.

Of course you've got to have a server out there to talk to.

Krap. I tried Kubuntu 8.04 or 8.10 and everything worked except the Wifi. Wouldn't recognize either of the two PCI cards I have and one of them's three years old. Now aside from the fact that it doesn't work (or maybe BECAUSE it doesn't work), I think they've caught up with Widows in usability. Still gotta work though. Neither FreeBSD or PCLinusOS wants to install at all.

Just got a new Thinkpad, T61. I'm going to install Windows Vista (came with the laptop) as a guest OS under SuSE's Xen virtual machine server. Just to do it, haven't really had the need to run Windows for many years now. No more dual booting. Just call up and load Windows in a window.

New processors (Intel & AMD) have virtualization technology built in, so an unmodified guest OS' can be installed. But if you don't "need" Windows, Linux Rocks! So go for it.

I just upgraded from 512K RAM to 2GB on a P4 Toshiba running Ubuntu Intrepid, and performance increased nicely. 

The graphics are tremendous!

IMHO Compiz Fusion is the bee's knees.

Yeah, I figured that out. Well I was somewhat surprised. I had gotten into Linux about 6 years ago, and back then, because I liked doing things the hard(er) way, I got into Gentoo Linux. Compiled from the ground up, three systems, and never got them running quite perfectly. They were fast though and usable. Got away from Linux, then decided to see if they had caught up in installation ease. Mandrake didn't fly, but Ubuntu was flawless for me on two machines that even Windows had problems installing on.

Sorry it didn't work out for you! Truth is, I am still using Windows XP for my computing. It works for me.

I’ve been pretty happy with Sabayon...which is a full Boat Gentoo based system....just download via torrent ....runs great on my 9500 phenom quad...no idea of how it works on a Laptop....though.
