One of my resolutions for the new year is to begin a food storage program for my new house. Unfortunately, I live in a very rural area where there aren't any bulk food warehouses. The only bulk foods available are from extremely overpriced health food stores and co-ops. Wal-Mart prices are actually pretty good for canned goods, but I want to buy wheat, barley, flour, oats, beans, etc., in 25# or 50# bags.
Can anyone point me in the direction of good sources for small quantities of staples? I wouldn't mind travelling once a year to pick the stuff up, if it would be worthwhile pricewise. I'm in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area.
I've done a pretty thorough search on the Internet, but feel as if I'm probably missing the best places. If anyone knows where they are, it's going to be FReepers!
Thanks in advance for your recommendations. And HAPPY NEW YEAR!
LOL. A hometown tradition. Naw, the Tide’s goin down!
Yes.
lots of the companies I deliver to in California are willing to sell retail and may give you some breaks on purchases be warned though most sell canned goods in #10 cans so there's some repackaging to deal with on some items...
OTOH if you have a freezer to fill or stg buckets you may save some serious coin on 50 lb'rs of beans and such or case prices on most any cuts of meats
Amen. It’s especially a good thing if you actually eat beans and rice, as we do... You have to cycle through your food storage, or you’ll end up eating outdated stuff when you really need quality... just a thought.
Dried or canned meats can make beans and rice much more tasty too, though expensive...
Utah 28, Alabama 17.... Go Utes!
just wide, they’re sucking tonight
bookies gotta be bitin nails about now...
utes are spos’ed to be down by 10
You can run 2150 feet per second, yes?
LOL. In the VERY rural area in which I live, my local “food service provider” is Bubba, when and if he decides to slaughter one of his hogs! I kid you not. And I like it that way.
Utah is playing the same way they’ve played all season. That’s a hint to Tork that they’re undefeated. LOL.
Well Alabama has better looking band uniforms...
I'm getting ready to buy another cow for our freezer
and I see you're in OK
I'm known round the 7 western states as the Bacon man cause of the company I haul to Cal for, a 175 mil a year outfit and they buy their pork bellies out of Guyman, I trust you know where that is.
it's all in doing the homework...
That they do.
Never been to Guymon, but I see it’s in the OK Panhandle. That’s even less interesting than the adjacent TX Panhandle, which is about as uninteresting as any place I’ve ever frequently driven through (and just about anything interests me). Seems like a really good location for procuring hog bellies.
I transplanted myself to OK from Southern California six years ago, and am still in an extended adjustment phase. Still adjusting, but the longer I’m here, the more I like it!
no doubt!
Thanks, everyone, for all your kind information. It’s time for me to toddle off to bed, but I’ll check back tomorrow in case there are any more relevant posts (not that I didn’t enjoy the ones about something called “Utes,” and hog bellies!
Good suggestion. Thanks.
