Sam's Club has fifty pound sacks of rice for about $25 and fifty pound sacks of Pinto beans for about $12.50. I've been stocking up on both.

As long as you don't open the bags they are protected from bugs.

You can live on rice and beans indefinitely.

I buy 25 pound bags and 50 pound bags of flour at Costco. I have also bought 10 pound bags of salt, and giant containers of honey. Probably 5 pound boxes of oatmeal. They have 25 and 50 pound bags of rice, too.

Well, my method is way ‘over simplified’ compared to what those ‘in the know’ do: WalMart, Sams Club and/or Costco.

Mostly canned goods and large bags of basic staples, dated and stored in large ‘bug-tight’ bins.

Rotate about once a year... and hope I never ever have to tap into it!

Thanks, LiberConservative, but the closest Costco is in Missouri. There IS a Sam’s Club in Tulsa, but when I add the cost of the membership to my relatively frugal needs, it inflates the price above what I would like to pay....I would only be going there once a year. They also don’t have wheat, and the flour I bought there once (with a one-day free pass) had weevils in it when I opened it! Their pasta is MORE expensive than Wal-marts, as are many of their other staple items. I just think I can do better than Sam’s Club, even if I have to pay shipping.

Do you have a Kroger's or a Smith's grocery store? The Smith's here in Nevada has a case lot sale about three times a year. Beats the pants off Costco. Also sounds weird but watch Amazon.com they are stocking groceries and often have free shipping days.

Generally, I’d say Costco has slightly lower prices than Sam’s Club, and a bit nicer selection.

Next time you are at your local Wal-Mart go to the bakery area ask them if they have any empty 5 gal and 2 gal. plastic pails. They get their icings and other stuff in these pails and they just throw them away after they are empty. These are food grade pails with a gasket seal in he lid.

They are free, which you will appreciate. You will have to wash them out.

I use them to store the 25# bags of flour and rice and other items like pasta that I buy at Sam's. A 5 gal pail will hold a 25# bag of flour.

I have some acquaintances from various faiths that buy in big quantities. I'll ask around and ping you back if they have access to any exceptional bargains.

Wal-Mart is getting over rated in my area, also.

Yeah all the grocery stores raised their prices when gas was $4 and have yet to reduce their prices IMO.

Now the Feds want to hike gas taxes by 50% which will result in everything costing more ... not just gas. Which in the long run brings in more tax money for states and municipalities because they wont have to even raise taxes ... the more things cost the more they rake in.

THANKS! I have been looking for a source for plastic pails, and just didn’t know where to ask. Everyone in my town is very helpful, so I’m sure I won’t get an attitude if I ask the next time I’m at Wal-mart (which is fairly frequently).

Large quantities of open items should have ‘bay leaves’ placed inside, and that will prevent bugs as you use out of them.
