Hung over? Try eggs, fries, cocoa ...

Hung over? Try eggs, fries, cocoa ... Thursday, January 1, 2009 3:24 AM By Kevin Mayhood THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH The cup of cures for your pounding head and queasy stomach runneth over.

New Year's Day is a little late for a lecture on abstinence or moderation, and we won't go into the scientific intricacies of a hangover.

Suffice it to say you're hurtin', so here are a few remedies that folks say work, at least for them.

"Hot chocolate," said Laura Yazvac, a bartender at the Surly Girl Saloon in the Short North. "Chocolate milk is good for dehydration."

Lactose-intolerant? Yazvac suggests a smoothie made with fruits high in antioxidants, including blueberries, strawberries and oranges. Add vitamins and Ibuprofen, she said, and say goodbye to symptoms.

Maureen Bryan, a former Hilliard resident who reads The Dispatch online from her home in South Carolina, swears by this method: a Wendy's hamburger, fries and a Coke.

Then take two Excedrin and sleep another hour.

Jonna Stumpo, an accounts-payable clerk from Sunbury, agrees with the fast-food remedy, but adds a glass of V-8.

That's light fare compared to the British cure called a "fry up." The 3,000-calorie grease-fest includes fried eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, mushrooms and tomato, and toasted or fried bread.

Leigh Ann Ellison, a bartender at the High Beck Corner Tavern in the Brewery District, whips up a special bloody mary for customers who return to the scene of the crime.

"You get your vitamin C back with the tomato juice, I put some Guinness in for iron, and the celery is a little vegetable to get your body going again."

Food and drink help counter the low blood sugar and dehydration that come with overindulgence, said Glen Aukerman, director of the Ohio State University Center for Integrative Medicine.

More alcohol, he said, doesn't help.

"A lot of chemical changes take place in the body when consuming alcohol," Aukerman said. "We have to replace what's missing."

The best research-supported remedy is a time-released, balanced B-complex tablet taken before and after a night of drinking, he said.

More than a drink or two wipes out our internal B supplies. He suggests taking a vitamin B tablet with a tablet of magnesium oxide.

Research has shown that concentrated prickly-pear cactus juice helps with dry mouth and nausea but can exacerbate a headache.

The Internet is filled with options, from sweating out the poisons to eating Vegemite on toast.

But, alas, cures aren't instant, so you might just have to look forward to feeling better. Sometime.

Sounds pretty good. Lotta work for a guy with a hangover, though.

Can I make it the night before and then nuke it? ;-)

Actually, Chinese takeout fried rice would do the trick, too.

Yes to both questions! You can fix it a day before, then nuke it, or Chinese fried rice would work ok too, I’d still crack an extra egg into it though.

I enjoy my beer (check out my screen name) but I hate the effects of over-indulgence.

Through research, trial and error and very painful experience, I can tell you what works for me. When I going to drink, I have a glass of water with every beer. I have to pi$$ like Secretariat, but I never get a hangover. Add a multi-vitamin and 200 mg of ibuprofen and you'll be right as rain.

I must, however, say for the record that my personal experience for hangover avoidance is not an excuse for over-indulgence. Moderation is the way to go.

To all Freepers this New Year, I say

Cheers! Salut! L'chaim! Za vas! Slainte!

I have a cure! I don’t ever drink enough to get drunk! Had one glass of champagne...then lights out for 8 hours. Woke up feeling good. Did chores, business, family...now I’m relaxing with beer. Rinse, repeat.

Or the alternative... Stay drunk! Rinse, repeat!
