Free Republic Thread of BUY THIS GAME! (Video game recommendation thread)
NA | December 31,2008 | Self

Posted on 12/31/2008 4:47:43 PM PST by NinoFan

I thought it might be useful to have a thread for game recommendations.

Thread suggestions:

While popular games like Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Metal Gear Solid 4 deserve every bit of attention they've received, I can't think of a gamer that doesn't know of their existence. Let's focus on the hidden gems and lesser known games.

Let's not get into system wars. The Wii, 360, PS3, PC and Mac all have their own must-have games. If you're a hardcore gamer, odds are good that you own all of these platforms anyway, so please keep your stoney, ninthing, and xbot biases to a minimum.

That out of the way... Let's begin!

LostWinds - Wii

Exclusive to the Wii's Wiiware service, this unique platformer uses the Wiimote in a creative way. Instead of controlling your character, you control the wind. The game is very short, but is sold at a reasonable downloadable price. A sequel is in the works.

Hotel Dusk - DS

Miss graphic adventures? Then play this game. You control Kyle Hyde, a cocky ex-cop, on his path to uncover the mystery behind a hotel. With a good story (by video game standards anyway) and fun gameplay, this is a must purchase.

Valkyria Chronicles - PS3

This TRPG is absolutely gorgeous. Set in a fictionalized take on 1930s Europe, you battle in a storybook atmosphere with a beautiful soundtrack. It suffered absolutely pathetic sales with only 33,000 copies sold during its debut month in the US, so do your part and support good games by picking this one up!

Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure - Wii

While it may look 'kiddie', this adventure/puzzle game provides lots of entertainment for older gamers.

I was just playing Animal Crossing: City Folk. It’s as cute as can be. Are you allowed to say “cute” in video game threads?

I have the Wii and was thinking about getting that game, basically what do you have to do in the game, is it kinda like Sim City? I am also thinking about getting a PS3, what games do you all recommend? Oh yeah, the Wii Fit, totally AWESOME by the way

I loved the Gamecube and DS Animal Crossing games, but haven’t played the new Wii game. Did you get it with WiiSpeak? And if so, how well does WiiSpeak work?

“I never moved beyond Pong”

Me, too.
And my kids only have a Game Cube, so I reckon we’re totally out of the loop on this thread!

I don’t have a console system, and my PC is pretty outdated. I still spend a fair amount of time playing Trainz Railroad Simulator 2004 (the latest version of Trainz that will run on my P3).

I hear later versions of Trainz are more realistic, but I’m not sure I want to deal with broken couplers. :)

My daughters absolutely love the DS game “Princess Debut.”
They like the “Naruto” games on the Wii. I enjoy the “Animal Crossing” series.

I play most of my games on the PS3.

I highly recommend PS3:”Fallout3” (very fun and addictive).

PS3: “Silent Hill - Homecoming”(scary as hell... don’t play it late at night in the dark).

PS3: “Star Wars - The Force Unleashed” (The game opening is worth the ‘price of admission’).

PS3: “Call Of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare” (On of the missions you get to control an AC130 Gunship!!!!! Need I say more).

I believe all of the above games are available on other platforms. My experience with them is on the PS3.

Civilization III.

I bought my son Civilization Revolution for the XBox 360, and it’s pretty cool, but Civ 3 may be the best strategy game ever.

We only play the free games for Unix systems (especially 3-D, directly rendered, first-person shooters). ...allows more cash for putting more survival goods in storage. ;-)

In animal crossing, you collect items, furnish your own house, work on your town, and share your creation with friends. However, you don’t start off like in Simcity where you build everything from the ground up. Animal Crossing is more of a combination of a traditional video game with certain mini-quests and missions to complete and that fun creation element.

For PS3, it really depends on your tastes. If you’re into games that make you think, go for Valkyria Chronicles (link in OP). If you’re going for something that’s pretty unique, try Little Big Planet. It’s a cute platformer with an emphasis on creating your own levels. Of course, if you’re into shooters, there’s also Metal Gear Solid 4, the PS3 version of Grant Theft Auto, and the two Resistance games, but I’m not sure if you’re into the violent stuff.

LOL!!

I remember that. I was barely old enough to play a video game. The pit that opened and closed would always get me.

I did poorly with my niece and nephew’s Wii bowling game on Christmas day. I’m guessing a few slugs of Irish Mist didn’t help.

That should be GRAND Theft Auto, not Grant, LOL. And of course, it’s not a shooter, but a sandbox game that incorporates a bunch of different genres. Still, if you’re not into shooters and violent games, you probably won’t like it.
