Help I have a Border Collie / mix Dog He is 1 1/2 yrs old, he is a very smart dog, The other night I had to go looking for him and found him on a deer.... still alive! He has a sisiter that is 6 months old and is a Black Lab /mix. she to was with him shortly getting in on the action. I pulled him off. and scolded him allthe way home, this moring I let them out and went in to bake a cake, 30 min. i called them to come in and no one came. I put on my jacket and when out to look for them. Just as I started up the 4 wheeler they both came running around the shop and both are cover in blood. I called to the boder collie and asked him to show me what he caught and he took me to the dead deer. Is this something I shuld be worried about? How do I stop this from ever happening again, some one help! There must be a way I do not want to have to put him down. thank you
You are in trouble. When he runs out of deer, he will graduate to sheep, goats and chickens.
EW EW EW EW EW EW EW EW EW!!!!!
LOLOLOL...that’s a pretty good story. My dog use to chew on electrical cords, till she got hold of a live one. Dumb ass dog, just sat there and barked at it for hours.
IMO - if theyve got a taste - theyre not going to forget it and will repeat the behavior unless they are restrained.
Chain the dog, that's your responsibility — but I doubt the story. House dogs usually don't have the need to feed wild. Chase yes, but not to feed. Dogs running deer is pretty common, the local game warden usually can handle that, catching one, different story. If they corner the deer, they just bark alot.
Pictures please ... Wolves hunt in packs for a good reason. And even then, when they get a healthy deer trapped, there is no certainty the wolves will win the battle without loss.
We trained our 'wind dogs' by letting them feast on the deer. But of course that was after someone had shot it first.
Our dog smiles from ear to ear. I say, “Smile!” and the dog smiles big. He also smiles when he gets caught doing something he should not be doing. I mean the dog smiles for effect. It is not a reflex. He wants something.
Do you smell something?
I agree, something about this story doesn’t sound right, Border Collies are a dog that has to work, they live to work and what work are they bred for — herding and watching over sheep, not to kill the sheep... dogs, too, are meat eaters and I agree, if this is true, these dogs may be looking for raw meat... one of my dogs very meals is venison and many raw-feeders of large dogs, have deals with local police to call them for fresh road kill deer — for their dogs.
I knew it was too good to be true. I’m glad I got my zingers in, though.
Awww! Just when we were starting to have some fun!
I've tried to explain this to my dog. I buy him the best food available, grain free, and he gets oodles of herbal dog treats...Yet he still feels the need to catch, kill and partially devour squirrels, possums and feral kitties. I've seen him spring about six feet in the air to snatch a squirrel right off a tree.
I think we have a Troll
Train him to bring them home and you will have solved many problems. Such as: the high cost of hunting licenses, ammunition, and you can take deer out of season. Heck, I’d be trying to teach him how to skin and gut them.
LOL! What breed?

There are several litters and generations spread around different guys in the deer club, only a few can help skin, we've got some who fetch us post-hunt beers, start the BBQ, make sandwiches, stuff like that.
Our Border Collie keeps the deer away from the garden and fruit trees....
She also has brought two horses up to the house that got away from their owners while riding in the forestry near the house. One was complete with saddle, bridle and a fifth of whiskey in the saddlebag......Good Dog!
I need a dog like that. You anywhere near NJ?
It's not an EW, it's a deer!
