The Web sites archived version, from 2004, identified some of them, which in addition to Household International and Wisconsin Energy included Exelon, the countrys largest operator of nuclear power plants, SBC Communications and the Chicago Teachers Union. The archived Web site said ASK devised campaigns to drive the public discourse to areas of greatest advantage for a broad range of major corporations seeking to influence public policy.
Mr. Axelrod began working with Mr. Obama in 2002. Beginning in 2005, the year Mr. Obama joined the Senate, ASKs description of its work went through a series of revisions that continued into last summer. Client names were removed, and the characterization of ASKs methods was softened. Among other things, a reference to Mr. Axelrods winning campaigns for Fortune 100 companies was stripped from his biography.
One company was Household International, the subprime lender, which is now a part of HSBC. Mr. Axelrods firm was hired to create television advertisements for Household in late 2002, after the company reached a $484 million settlement of accusations that it had gouged borrowers with costly loans and hidden fees.
