She isn't learning Mexican, she's learning formal Spanish. There is a difference. Formal Spanish is actually close to Latin.

Latin. Learn that and the rest of Indo European languages , or semitic—by comparison—will fall into your lap.

Learning anything is good. Spanish is useful, if for no other reason than to hear what they are saying about you. :)

Depends what she wants to be when she grows up.

My 14 year old son is looking into starting Latin next year at his private evangelical Christian school. He’s thinking about going into Law School, so he thinks Latin will help.

One of my 12 year old daughters is probably going to take Spanish because she’s already had a little in middle school, and she likes it.

My other 12 year old daughter is going to take Sign Language because she has speech problems.

I figure let the kid decide what interests him.

I don’t consider Spanish a bad idea, but I would prefer my kids learn Korean, German and then Japanese. This is because of my work, and personal life, however.

Learning spanish may help them communicate better with their employers later on in life and build goodwill across culutures. :-D

It’s not inappropriate.

But the sad part is that it may be necessary.

Encouraging kids to learn Spanish will delay assimilation of US immigrants, since it gives them less incentive to learn English.

Count on it. Last thing we should be doing is speaking Spanish to the illegals.

Advice?

She should take them all. Russian is beautiful, though reading and writing Cyrillic requires a bit of work at first.

I found that French and Spanish conflicted. The Spanish sort of pushed the French out of my memory. Too many similar words.
