By sounding bad in even the wrong ways on SNL, Kanye's arrived at something wholly new in the spectrum of vocal values: sheer charisma in place of both skill and authenticity... In other words, he's the perfect frontman for a time in music where there is only an ever-changing front. The perfect description of the Obama Election.

Pitchy? I watched the show, and saw both "performances" by Kanye West. Without enhancement, he's no better than a first-round Idol reject, and worse than some of even those. The flashy, animated Apple ad-style backdrops are all that saved those performances from being a complete wreck.

Whatever happened to the good ol’ days when we just accepted the fact that guys like Robert Plant and Roger Daltrey only ever hit those really high notes in the studio?

I have never seen more apologists for someone with little talent, as I’ve seen with Kanye West. I just don’t get it. He doesn’t even rap particularly well, and he sure can’t sing. But yet many people consider him a genius.

There's also something racially pernicious about the complaints that Kanye can't sing; it feels fraught with the racist meme that all African-Americans are supposed to be able to sing well. Um, no, not all black people are supposed to be able to sing. Just the ones who, you know, go into the singing business.

There's also something racially pernicious about the complaints that Kanye can't sing...that the lack of expert rapping or singing somehow makes the record not "real" (read: "black") enough. << cough cough >> Horse poop << cough cough >>

When Spock put out an album no one made it an 'intergalactic humanoid' thing. He was just bad.

An absolutely purely atrocious article that makes me wish I had not already cancelled my LA Times subscription so I could do it again.
I had never seen Kanye West sing. I’d heard the idiocy he spouted at Bush, and the plastic surgeon who stitched up my little son’s boo-boo is the brother of the doctor who killed Kanye’s mom, but that was my only Kevin Bacon connection to him.
I saw him on Saturday Night Live, and was so shocked by his poor singing that I did not even hit fast forward. I thought he was a huge pop star, and the man literally can’t hold a note. I was watching to see any sign of talent, but he didn’t move spectacularly either. The songs were kind of catchy, not bad, really, but his singing! He is like a first day reject from American Idol.
Race has nothing to do with it. Some people cannot sing, and Kanye West is one of them.

No, they're all supposed to have rhythm; and, knowing a lot of real Africans, I can say they certainly would not have gotten it from there.
Hank Williams, Jr. is notorious for going flat at the ends of phrases and needing things bumped back up to pitch.
There are a lot of vocally really interesting singers out there who have rough (Tom Waits) or quirky voices (Elvis Costello) that would never ever be found on Radio Disney who, nevertheless, still have something interesting to say, an interesting way to present it, and manage to sing on pitch.

Am I reading this right? Are they giving him a pass for sucking? And that it is racist to think he should be a good singer because he is black?
Umm no..how about the fact that he is on TV in front of millions and playing to crowds of millions with NO TALENT.
Seriously, it is times like these where my heart bleeds for real musicians who never get the break they so richly deserve and their race has nothing to do with it.
Kanye is like Obama...Madison Ave. made. No substance.
