Vanity: Most Annoying Christmas Songs
The Radio | 12/17/2008 | VRWCmember

Posted on 12/17/2008 7:50:42 AM PST by VRWCmember

For several weeks now a few local radio stations have been playing Christmas music non-stop, and I love hearing the songs celebrating the season -- especially the traditional carols.

How can you help but feel better when you hear Nat King Cole's smooth voice singing "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..." (The Christmas Song) or Bing Crosby wishing you a White Christmas with every Christmas card he writes. And when Mark Lowry asks Mary if she knew that her baby boy would one day walk on water, it gives me chills. My drive home from work from late November to late December is so much more peaceful and enjoyable as I hear so many cheerful and encouraging songs celebrating the nativity.

There are, however, a few annoying songs that seem to get a lot of play this time of year that prompt me to change the station as soon as they begin. Just the first few notes, before the lyrics even kick in, make me want to hurl, or lash out at the stupidity of the idiot that put the disc in the player.

So as a diversion from the more important issues of the day, please post the titles/artists of the songs of the season that induce the urge to vomit or cause you to change the station when you hear them.

Here are my top most annoying Christmas songs ever: 1. So This Is Christmas (War is over?) by John Lennon 2. Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time by Paul McCartney 3. Last Christmas I Gave You My Heart by Wham/George Michael 4. Santa Baby by Madonna

Jeff Foxworthy’s Redneck 12 Days of Christmas is funny.

“Twelve-pack of Bud
Eleven Wrastling tickets
Ten o’ Copenhagen
Nine years probation
Eight table dancers
Seven packs of Redman
Six cans of Spam
Five flannel shirts
Four big mud tires
Three shotgun shells
Two hunting dogs
... And some parts to a Mustang GT.”

In defense of bad singing (Kanye West on SNL, industry use of autotune, and the changing culture) (LA Times 04:10 PM PT, Dec 15 2008 August Brown )

“Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”. Nothing else even comes close.

“All I Want For Christmas” was originally recorded by Spike Jones and his City Slickers. Looking over the Spike Jones discography it wouldn't be too great a stretch to assume this song goes along with the rest of that silliness and was never intended to become a Christmas Classic. Unfortunately, much of the Spike Jones stuff is forgotten except this song and “Der Fuehrer’s Face”.

Quite so. Bob Denver was involved after all. The purely Muppet business on the album is what I liked most about it.

“We Wish You a Merry Christmas” when Ms. Piggy mis-hears the “Bring out the figgy pudding” followed by Animal going overboard, is classic Muppet non-sense.

Not that I think this is annoying but... it could be on someone's list.

Jingle Bombs
Achmed The Dead Terrorist
(With a little help from Jeff Dunham)

Dashing through the sand
With a bomb strapped to my back
I have a nasty plan
For Christmas in Iraq

I got through checkpoint A
But not through checkpoint B
That's when I got shot in the ass by the U.S. Military

Ooo, Jingle bombs, jingle bombs mine blew up you see
Where are all the virgins that Bin Laden promised me?
Jingle bombs, jingle bombs your soldiers shot me dead
The only thing that I have left is this towel upon my head

I used to be a man,
But every time I cough
Thanks to Uncle Sam
My nuts keep falling off

My bombing days are done,
I need to find some work
Perhaps it would be much safer as
A convenient store night clerk,

Ooo, Jingle bombs, jingle bombs I think I got screwed
Don't laugh at me because I'm dead or I keel you!

I keel you!

I believe it is the Jose Feliciano version of "Feliz Navidad" that you keep hearing. I'm not sure Freddie Fender ever covered it.

Anyway, while I agree with most of the annoying songs posted on this thread, the old standards are getting kind of tired too. Fortunately, there is a lot of contemporary Christmas songs that are worthy but they never get much airplay because most radio stations pretty locked down their Christmas playlist 20 years ago and never varied it. I think I will start a thread later this week on "overlooked" contemporary Christmas songs that deserve a place next to Bing Crosby, Bobby Helms and Nat King Cole in the repertoire.

Mel Torme was Jewish too and he wrote the Christmas song (co-wrote actually). They wrote it a hot summer (PRE-global warming) and wanted to keep “cool” by jotting down everything they could think of that would remind them of a a cold day “chestnuts roasting on an open fire... jack frost nipping at your nose...”

Most radio stations pretty locked down their playlists PERIOD 20 years ago. It’s why non-talk commercial radio sucks these days.

Oh, but how about "Cocktails for Two", and "Chloe", and of course the "William Tell Overture" with the horse race in the middle . . . .?

My favorite was one of the guys from my school singing

I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus
Underneath his belt buckle last night

The administration wasn’t expecting it.
