The CG animated feature Delgo opened last weekend and nobody went to see it. According to Box Office Mojo, Delgo had the worst opening ever for a film that opened in more than 2,000 theaters earning just $511,290 or $237 per theater.
Moments like this really make one pause and reflect. What is the world coming to when an animated film with the voices of Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, Chris Kattan, Anne Bancroft, Eric Idle, Val Kilmer, Lou Gossett Jr, Malcolm McDowell, Michael Clarke Duncan, Burt Reynolds and Kelly Ripa isnt a box office blockbuster? A story that makes sense and visuals that dont make you want to heave are quaint touches, but the filmmakers behind Delgo understood where it really counted: celebrity voice actors. They hired every B- and C-list actor this side of Dancing With the Stars and somehow still failed. You know the recession is affecting Americans deeply when they no longer want to see Chris Kattan and Kelly Ripa voicing their CG characters.
Heres a little taste of what all of America missed last weekend.
Yuck! No thanks. One of the comments said: "And unless youre into Al Gores Kool Aid, youre not going to spend $12 to be lectured to about diversity on date night. Pure and simple."
I never even heard of it. Anyone else?
I had not even heard of it until today.
As it is, I don’t go to movie theaters to catch movies I actually want to see. This sounds like one I won’t even torrent.
Eric Idle is a very unpleaant man and he is not funny.
We need to start boycotting all the MSM companies for giving us O.
Lots of people hadn’t heard of it but from what I saw I’m surprised it wasn’t marketed direct to video.
Of course not all movies that bomb at the box office are
bad—I liked An American Carol, a conservative comedy!
(Which the lib critics torpedoed for obvious reasons.)
What the heck is Burt Reynolds doing in this?
That FSU education didn’t work out to well for him.
Weird. Anne Bancroft died in 2005, I think.
to=too (we Gators do know how to spell after all)
She did, this was her last job.
It’s possible my eyes glanced at a review of it in a local paper for about half a second, then quickly moved on.
It gets a robust 16 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

>>Consensus: Delgo features a blend of plot elements from earlier (and superior) fantasy films, with weaker animation and dull characters.
(Example: the horde of armies clashing—Lord of the Rings)
Mary Ann Johanson:
>>It’s a good thing I just bought the Wall-E DVD, because I’m gonna need to watch it at least a dozen times to scrub the horrors of Delgo out of my brain.
Bill Gibron:
>>
a lot like watching your computer’s graphics card vomit.
Nope
Looks like a star wars rip off. *upchucks*
Of course voices are recorded in advance of other production...
So basically you're saying it's no different than the last three Star Wars movies.
She was talented.
CGI torture, with hit-in-the-nuts and digestive gas gags galore.
And the voice of Chris Kattan to bring it all home.
I was looking for a movie to take my kids to. I looked at the story line and decided a lecture on the benefits of inter-racial or inter-species dating was not appropriate.
