Children are adopted. Dogs are purchased.

Ah...give 'em a break. Mostly, I remember the names of the dogs in my neighborhood, not their parents.

I know...I know...dogs have OWNERS not parents. I GET IT.

sheeesh!

No one is purchasing these dogs; they’re not purebreds from a fine kennel. They’re being taken home and given love. The process of acquiring them falls within the definitions of an adoption. The word does not just apply to humans or even to family situations; you can adopt a belief, a principle, a name, a lifestyle, and all of these are perfectly valid usages in English.

Wrong.

Why do some of you people take this attitude with dog people.

To some of us with no children, dogs ARE our families.

BTW, there’s no such thing as a free kid, just like there’s no such thing as a free puppy. Do you have any idea how much the total to raise a kid to age 18, (and sometimes beyond), comes to?

Yes, dogs are not people, everyone gets that.

Let’s be brutally honest about this. Adopted children are purchased as well. Don’t kid yourself, it is a huge ‘business’. You ever seen how much money you have to fork over for an adoption?

The reason for using the term adoption is not to equalize the pet with a person. It is because people ‘adopt’ an animal to be considered as part of the family (ie the family pet). Not a HUMAN part of the family, but are you going to argue that the family dog is not part of that family? The family thinks so. The dog is not just relegated to ‘the dog tied up in the back yard’ or ‘my cheap burglar insurance.’

Dogs are adopted by people who will keep them until their natural deaths. Buying a dog makes it too easy to sell it, give it away, turn it loose in the “woods” or otherwise dispense of it as you would something you bought.

We who adopt our pets are “forever families” to them. I have a blue heelerXcocker female, a collieXrhodesianXlabXgoldenXetc mix female and a tuxedo cat who thinks he’s a dog. I can’t imagine life without them. And I would not sell them or give them away for any reason. Even to get into a “Senior” apartment.

Really? I have adopted dogs & cats & not paid a dime. I gave a donation. However when you adopt a child you pay for lawyer’s fees etc...

Children are adopted. Dogs are purchased.

I take it that you have never acquired a dog from a rescue organization or the humane society. The process truly is an ADOPTION in every sense of the word, even though moeny changes hands.
