Unlucky: Black cats less likely to be adopted at shelters

Throughout history, it has conjured up images of witchcraft and magic. In the Middle Ages, it was burned alive for its supposedly supernatural powers.
In North America, it is considered unlucky to cross paths with it.
Many shelters during the month of October ban its adoption out of concern it may be abused as a result of the image it portrays on Halloween. The black cat has come a long way since the 15th century. And though its supernatural image in the 21st century has largely been relegated to folklore and mythology, many in society still consider it a social misfit because of, well, its color, or lack thereof.Indeed, the black cats main enemy is its own genetic makup.

I adopted a black cat several years go because no one else would. She was the sweetest kitty and has forever given me a soft spot in my heart for black cats. You won’t be sorry.

I’ve never been sorry for adopting a cat. Not even Zia the Demon Kitty.

Tristan suffers from the delusion that the humans see as well as he does in the dark.
Then he goes and proves that he doesn’t see in the dark quite as well as he thought.

I love black cats, I had three at once but I lost my last one two months ago. I’d like to get one once my finances improve. BTW, in the UK, black cats are considered good luck.

My parents had a series of Blackies that spanned fifty years - six or seven different ones IIRC. They are both gone now, along with the cats. Think Ill adopt one soon.
My first black cat, Buddha (Boo), he did have a little white spot on his chest. When my maternal grandmother first saw him, it reminded her of her black cat, Pete, when she was a little back around 1917 or 1918.

I've got an all black named Lucky and she's the sweetest cat ever. Very vocal and too smart for a cat. She taught the other cat (mostly black) to open doors.

We have a black cat with a small white spot on his chest. Our daughter brought him home from college to join our other two. He has so much personality as well as that little swagger walk! I'm really superstitious, but this cat has brought nothing but joy!

Black cats are my favorite too! Since I left home 26 years ago, that’s all I’ve ever had. Currently on my second set.

My only complaint is tripping over them in the dark. We have two black cats. We keep a trail of automatic night lights throughout the house. Also, when we remodeled our home, we chose light hardwood, white tile or pale gray carpet throughout - better to see the Dark Ones (who tend to lay around just anywhere).
Yes, it's all about the cats.

My first cat - Peeps, an all black cat, who I adopted from a cat shelter. She has one white whisker and a small little tuft of white hair on her chest. She's been a good cat, she's 16 yrs old and still going strong.
I picked her out of all the other cats there, because she was all by herself - a loner, like me.
In the summer, she likes to take a bath in the sprinklers and lay on the grass.

My black cat (currently on my lap and impeding my progress with typing this comment) looks just like a Halloween scaredy cat. Longer hair that sticks up on her back, with green eyes. She’s a pretty girl. I let her out on the balcony of my condo and she basks in the sun. Won’t let her out on Halloween though, so she won’t freak anyone out, or they her. I think black cats are beautiful, but then I am prejudiced, LOL!
