I recently lost my job, and, as a single mother of five kids, I am wondering if any Freepers know of work at home/telecommute opportunities that are worthwhile. There are lots of scams out there!

That's a fact. Fox News ran a segment on this yesterday afternoon. The clearest advice given was don't accept any requirement that you pay for background checks or other services that may be required. You shouldn't have to pay for anything.
In fact, they flatly said most work-at-home offers were scams. So be careful, and good luck!
My sister is a legal scopist...she transcribes court reporter notes from home. I think if you look online you can find home study courses for this. She does okay, although not great. She brings in about $1,000 a month.
If you’re a good typist, a LOT of professional people hire people to do their typing and paperwork. I worked a spring and summer doing that from home a couple of years ago, made some money, met some good people when I did have to visit the office.

None are reputable. Starting a home-based business is the only way to go - but requires initial investment on your part to get through even the minimal start-up.

Have a friend who does scheduling at home for traveling nurses/home care, making sure there is always someone to cover appointments. She is on a beeper sometimes and a computer with internet is a must, but she home schools and job works out great for her.
You may wish to check around at home health/senior care agencies.
You know, that’s a thought I’ve had, too. However, I don’t want to get into MLM marketing or the sort of sales stuff like Mary Kay or Pampered Chef - good companies, good products, but not something that I see as recession-proof.

I believe there’s a lot of work available filling out insurance paperwork. Good luck with whatever you find. :-)
There are probably a lot of small companies who could use a part time bookkeeper from home. If it is a few person shop, they don't want to hire someone to do that but would be willing to pay someone for a few hours of work per week to turn a stack of bills and receipts into proper accounting records.
There are also medical transcriptionists, but some classes are required to understand terminology.
Doctors offices are busy, in fact, my Opthamologists today said he was very busy...you might look for office work in a Dr’s office. Also temporary agencies are used by companies looking for fulltime employees...sort of a “try them out” approach before committing benefits and costs other than hourly wage. Temp agencies like Manpower, Olsten, Kelly and others hire for temps. If you aren’t quezzy maybe a 5-6 week CNA course will net you a job immediately after with relatively good pay.
Check your area for “daycare” paid by State until you get on your feet, and take whatever programs the dems have set up, because you have paid your taxes...that is what it’s supposed to be for,,, not bailing out Auto Mfgrs. We would certainly like to see a deserving person collect necessary help than all the “give aways” to those who don’t deserve it. You have five children and God will help you, as our prayers will be for you to get a great job, and the help you need.
If you can design and build webpages that is something you can do from home, although it sometimes takes a bit of time before the money starts coming in... and you need to build a bunch of them.

I can also help with advice as I do this myself for supplemental income. I could probably support myself from it if I had to, but it would take a bit of time to get rolling... but once rolling, it’s an ‘auto-pilot’ type of business.
