Kirk Douglas has enjoyed an illustrious career with his larger-than-life acting style. So what if those silly academy voters failed to give him an Oscar? Life is more than awards.
Douglas has overcome quite a lot to reach 92. In an August column for Newsweek, he explained how deep depression set in after he suffered a stroke a dozen years ago. He explained how his wife pushed him to get out of bed and work on his speech therapy.
"Depression is caused by thinking too much about yourself," he wrote. "Try to think of others, try to help them. You will be amazed how that lessens your depression. That satisfaction is priceless."

His autobiography is fascinating reading. Literally a rags to riches story. He wrote about how one year when he was in New York City and a struggling young actor he was so down and out that he was actually turned away by the Salvation Army on Thanksgiving. The next year he was in a hit show and had Thanksgiving dinner at the mansion of a wealthy family. Just fascinating stuff.

He named his production company after his mother. Apparently his father was a truly nasty man.
