Again freepers are the smartest people I know so I thought I would ask here. I am looking for a good summer camp in the Science/Math/Tech field to send my daughter (16) to this summer. I was wondering if any of you freepers know of any good summer programs/camps in the US.
If you stay locally, like we did - the first night they put on a small firworks demo and invite the parents for a welcome bar-be-cue. Then on the last night, the students put on a HUGE fireworks display for the community and they have another bar-be-cue for the families. And its all included in your camp fee. No extra cost! They also took a field trip each day to either a mine or an explosive factory. We could have come to any of the workshops to watch if we wanted - but I didn’t want to get in my son’s space.
The Nasa center in Huntsville, AL has a space camp. Check Georgia Tech here in Atlanta as well.
Here’s the link for the Marshall space Center in AL.

My son went to the All Arts and Sciences Camp sponsered by UNC-Greensboro this past summer. The kids get to pick two or more subjects to study. He did forensics and pixilation. The camp is held at different universities throughout the summer and the kids live on campus in the dorms and use the university facilities to do their research. He did his camp at William and Mary this past summer and loved it. In ‘09 he’ll go to the camp at Virginia Tech. I like the college atmosphere. I think it’ll help with the adjustment to campus life after high school. Google : All Arts and Sciences Camp, UNC - Greensboro.
Because, unlike some of the other petulant, fatuous clowns on this thread, I have actually spent my entire life in Universities [right down to being born in a University hospital], have devoted all of my adult life [and much of my childhood] to the study of "Science/Math/Tech", and am cognizant of [to the point of being obsessed with] the toll which nihilism is exacting upon our species.
Look, if the OP wants to send his daughter off to some finishing school for nihilist dykes, then that's his tragedy to embark upon, but if she were my daughter, then I'd be schooling her at home, and, quite frankly, I wouldn't let the poor girl out of my sight.
PS: You people - who are still operating under the illusion that the modern University is not a satanic instrument of Death - need to wake up and smell the coffee.
that being said my sister is a math major at U of Michigan and her future is ridiculously bright. i have no advice for you, but hey, at least you get a bump!
Camp?....Bad idea! For all the reasons KeyEyeDoubleDee stated, I would add that she might come home with an *a*t*t*i*t*u*d*e*!
Have you considered sending your daughter to the local community college instead? You would have a great deal more control over her social environment.
Three of my four children were homeschooled. These homeschoolers started community college at the age of 13, 12, and 13. They finished all college general required courses and Calculus III by the age of 15. My 2 girls finished B.S. degrees in mathematics by the age of 18, and the older girl had a masters in mathematics by 20.
Also....Because my girls attended a local university, and lived at home my husband and I were able to keep a close watch on their friends and activities. Both are now married to handsome engineers ( of our faith) and are lovely mothers and wives with families that are strong in the gospel.
I think someone “negative” on this board must have been a BAD teenager and is speaking from personal experience - but not all kids are like that. If your daughter scored 1900, she obviously doesn’t have lesbian love fests on the brain, nor has she been drinking liberal global-warming kool-aid.
Do not let those other posters scare you from sending your daughter away. If you have done a good job raising her, you do not have to worry about her turning into a lesbian or coming home prego’s - PLEASE! The type of kids that go to these programs are the (for lack of a better word) nerds! These are the kids that are there to LEARN. Oh my gosh - kids that actually learn and achieve - what a concept!!! Plus it looks real good on a college application!
I spent the whole week near the campus and they had so much control at MST - there was never any time to get in trouble. The regular students were not there when the campers were! We used it as a trial run for college and it allowed my son to choose NOT to go into explosives as he once thought he wanted to, but he went for his second choice of computers and also found out he didn’t want to live at a dorm and instead chose a college closer to home saving us $$$$
You must have raised a smart, beautiful, trustworthy daughter, and what a great way for her to try out college living and get a taste of dorm life for a week.
Thanks for all the great info freepers, I will keep researching these tips.
It was ID Tech Camp, which I believe is national. He took it at Fordham University last year. We're signing up early this year, so he'll be at Columbia, which would be a bit closer to home and a lot less travel time for me.
Just did a Google search:

They added an essay section, worth another 800 points for a total of 2400.
Well there was this one time at band camp...
:-P
Back in 1970 when I attended "UMR Tech", the male/female ratio was about 5000/100. Daughters were "safe" simply because of the lopsided competition! The annual St Patrick's celebration was a month long drunken bash.
I DID learn a few things there about making very loud explosions using very common ingredients...
Very nice area to revisit as an adult. For a single young male almost 40 years ago, it was not the typical college scene.

At UMR now MST (renamed) St Pat's is still is a month long drunken bash!!!! And if you saw my sons videos (the others he posted on youtube) he ALSO learned how to explode LOTS of things using common ingredients! If you haven't been there in a while, the new buildings and dorms are beautiful - thats where my son stayed. I would say it still is "not the typical college scene". Male/female ratio still low. I would bet you though, Rolla hadn't changed much since then. I had to laugh when the Walmart closed at 8 pm!!!
Luckily though, for summer campers - all is pretty much quiet (unless you are in explosives camp LOL!)
Sunday bump for more info, thanks!
Monday morning bump, still looking, thanks!
