The NHL rarely is amused by anything Sean Avery says or does, and proved it again by suspending the former Ranger pest Tuesday night for what the league termed "inappropriate" comments and conduct "detrimental" to the game of hockey.
Avery, who left the Blueshirts to sign a four-year $15.5 million deal last summer with Dallas, was banned indefinitely pending a hearing with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman for making derogatory comments about his former girlfriend - actress Elisha Cuthbert, who currently is dating Calgary star defenseman Dion Phaneuf - before Tuesday night's game between the Stars and the Flames.

I am hearing an echo of Natalie Maines here - although she is much fatter and uglier. And yes, I am comparing her to Sean Avery.
This has nothing to do with free speech. You can say anything that you want, but don't expect me to buy your product If I don't like your immage. The NHL has a contractual right to control its immage, and therefore the content of the public yaps of its players. If you don't like how the NHL runs its business - form your own league - the NSSHL - National Sloppy Seconds Hockey League.
No kidding. :) Incidentally, the Dallas Stars aren't exactly thrilled with Avery's statements either. He has actually played well (leaving him in a distinct minority so far this season), but I get the distinct impression that the other veterans really dislike the guy. Several of them have been very open about it, including Brendan Morrow, Brad Richards, and Marty Turco.
I thought for sure that Avery on the ice would make us forget how wonderfully obnoxious Steve Ott can be, but it just isn't happening. But I do think that he has played pretty well. He is never going to score much more than 15-20 goals a game anyway. The Stars' problems have much more to do with erratic goaltending and irresponsible defensive play by too many other forwards and defensemen (not including Avery) than with Avery's off-the-field comments.
I saw a special that ESPN did on him a while back.
He talked about his early childhood, playing with dolls and about his large collection of womens purses.
I thought he was supposed to be a ‘tough guy’ - at least that’s how he was presented when he was with the Rangers.

She's Canadian, so you can bet she's a hockey fan.

Hey, don’t look now but we have won two games in a row for the first time since last February. I can see us lifting the cup next spring already.

Avery is a loud-mouthed, a-hole. He was always a great fantasy hockey performer though—goals, assists, plus lots of PIMs.
I wouldn’t go THAT far. But I can see the Stars improving over the course of the season as the young guys get more experience. Whether they can make the playoffs is still an uphill fight, especially with the injury problems to players like Morrow, Zubov, and Lehtinen.
Yeah, last in the Western Conference, he's really been great for the Stars....NOT!!! Hull screwed the pooch on this acquisition.
Perhaps Avery is miffed that her new boyfriend is better looking.

You have to remember, the NHL is heavily influenced by Canada. Canada’s famous for trying to enforce PC (Just ask our brothers at Freedominion). I’m not surprised that a Canadian influenced league like the NHL would punish a person like Avery for a thoughtcrime.
But yeah, getting his ass kicked by Anson Carter and Laraque. Now that’s awesome!
Dallas screwed Minnesota out of a hockey team, and now an adopted Minnesotan screws Dallas out of a competitive hockey team. Life is sweet!
After that comment, I’d have paid good money to watch the first shift with Avery and Phaneuf on the ice at the same time. Is Avery a jerk? Yes. Is Bettman a PC-whussy? Undoubtedly.
