The NHL rarely is amused by anything Sean Avery says or does, and proved it again by suspending the former Ranger pest Tuesday night for what the league termed "inappropriate" comments and conduct "detrimental" to the game of hockey.
Avery, who left the Blueshirts to sign a four-year $15.5 million deal last summer with Dallas, was banned indefinitely pending a hearing with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman for making derogatory comments about his former girlfriend - actress Elisha Cuthbert, who currently is dating Calgary star defenseman Dion Phaneuf - before Tuesday night's game between the Stars and the Flames.

Hey Hanrahan! Hanrahan!
So does this mean that when Avery bagged her she was already "sloppy seconds?" Maybe now that she's moved on she should probably be reclassified as sloppy thirds?
Brutal.
What a pretty girl. I wish engineers had groupies.
Both know each other better than we do, and both know what goes on behind closed doors. Both get free publicity. Both should be banned from any publicity for a year.
I already posted on Hot Air. Whatever happened to free speech and the guarantee of it in the First Amendment not leading to punishment except in the case of a future lawsuit or breaching national security or a public or police investigation where gag rules should apply? As far as I know Sean did not breach national security or reveal info in an ongoing investigation. If he is sued in the future for slander so be it. Sure he was being indiscreet and boorish, but should he be deprived of his livelihood for not being politically correct? I guess insulting your former girlfriend is a much more flagrant violation of the rules than trying to break someone’s neck by ramming him into the boards when his back is turned (3-5 game suspension). Next we’re going to hear that Sarah Palin is going to be impeached by the Alaskan legislature for telling her son Track at a hockey game years ago to take the opposing player out with vigor and eliminate him from the play. Where does political correctness stop?
Before anyone complains that this penalty is overly harsh, it's worth noting that this guy has been a pain in the @ss for as long as he's played in the NHL, and has worn out his welcome with every team on which he's played. He was the best player for the Rangers in the playoffs last year, and yet they didn't even extend him a contract offer when the season ended. He's been involved in some bizarre on-ice incidents over the years, too . . . including allegations of racial epithets, etc. In one particularly ugly incident that got him run out of Los Angeles a couple of years ago, he nearly got his @ss kicked by a black opponent (Georges Laracque of Edmonton) and a black teammate (Anson Carter) in the players' parking lot after a game.
On top of all that, there's every indication that the guy is a "switch hitter," if not an outright "lefty hitter."
Do a Google search on a combination of terms like "Sean Avery," "nail polish," "Vogue magazine," "cross-dressing," etc. for all the bizarre details.
The First Amendment only restricts the government, not your employer, or in this case the overseeing league your employer is part of. Your employer has always been able to fine, suspend, or fire you outright for saying something they didn’t want to hear.
the hokey teams insist upon athletes talking to the MSM and if the MSM asks inappropriate questions then the individual athlete has the right to answer. If the NHL or a team wants the athlete to say something in particular than I suggest they give the athlete talking points....
I stand corrected. Avery sounds like a goon.
Given up when he signed a contract to play hockey for lots of money.
seconds, thirds? raised to what power?
I don't know about anyone else, but both of these photos just scream "gay" to me. LOL.
I’m getting a new appreciation for the game.
A crude remark, but nothing to do with the game, hey, he didn't shoot himself in the leg with an unliscensed weapon!
Goons like Jarrko Ruutu of Ottawa are given one game for headhunting with intent to injure (if that), and he gets suspended for an off-ice remark?
Bettman is and always will be a JERK, Avery is still being punished because he upset Brodeur last year (remember the "Avery Rule" that was added without precedence at the time.
Ah well, we need a break from the politics sometimes, and Avery is getting as screwed by Bettman, and the Dallas Stars, as Coleman is getting screwed by the "recount" and the unfunny lunatic he's running against.
Give the cougar another try.
She’s only 26.
It’s not the years, it’s the mileage. Someone up the thread said “publicity for both of them,” and I think that’s a fair reading.
Anyone for sloppy thirds?
