Pickles the Fire Cat Has a Secret [Disturbing article...]

Mama and I like to find those books to read to 3B that expose him to the diversity that we find so beautiful in life. [snip] He's too young to have voiced his own gender and sexuality identity, so we make sure to read him books about boys, girls, and what lies between as well as books about being gay, straight, and what lies between--well, we would if we could find them, that is.

[snip]

I'm sure that this news comes as no surprise to parents who have already read The Fire Cat, but as I was just reading it to 3B, it occurred to me that Pickles is gay, which is deliciously subversive for such a popular book that was written in 1960.

Ok, so I went online to look-up some reviews on a book I'd read when I was little after hearing it mentioned by a friend and I came across this.

My first thought, upon reading that first paragraph was the parents were muddying their poor kid's world-view by encouraging the reading of "gay materiel, straight materiel, and everything in-between."

Anyway, it got worse as they commandeer the main-character into a homosexual role... truly disturbing, IMO, that they are so concerned with their kid's sexuality at this point... but I digress.

The last comment, said anonymously, was the most sane thing on the page: "Somehow I fear this isn't a parody. Well, if you get to feel progressive while your kid gets a great book, it's a win-win, I guess."

That’s ok, you certainly have your right to that opinion; I just found it rather disturbing that one of my childhood stories had been read into so much and so... wrongly; that’s my opinion.

No, no. The author may have done it intentionally or the readers, reading the story thru their own prism, may be interpreting the character incorrectly.

I'm sure if most people re-read their childhood stories, they would see them in a totally different light.

A lot of the stuff passes over our heads as kids. ;)

And, yes, I still believe cats are kinda gay.

That’s my opinion, that they’re reinterpreting it, and what I took to be the fairly obvious meaning of the phrase “read into” above.

Um, my kid loved that book. I read it a thousand times. I beg to differ/ Pickles is most certainly NOT gay. Is this along the lines of ‘Abraham Lincoln (et al.) was gay’?

My cat isn't gay, my cat isn't even a cat. I don't know what the hell she is. She's just here, hangs out, begs for supper at 5:00 p.m. then thats it........except starting at about 5:00 a.m. she jumps on my bed waiting for me to wake up..........

I have one, thank you; it may be small and meaningless in the big scheme of things, but I’m a free man.
