one of my childhood stories had been read into so much and so... wrongly; that’s my opinion.

No, no. The author may have done it intentionally or the readers, reading the story thru their own prism, may be interpreting the character incorrectly.

I'm sure if most people re-read their childhood stories, they would see them in a totally different light.

A lot of the stuff passes over our heads as kids. ;)

And, yes, I still believe cats are kinda gay.

That’s my opinion, that they’re reinterpreting it, and what I took to be the fairly obvious meaning of the phrase “read into” above.
