A second suspect has been charged in connection with the slaying of a Northwest Washington couple in their homes last weekend.
Angela Hernandez, 20, of Ingraham Street NW, was arrested late Wednesday and ... ordered held without bail.
Hernandez has admitted tying victims Michael Spevak, a psychiatrist, and his wife, Virginia, with telephone cords while her two companions robbed their home. ...
The charging document states that Hernandez was a friend of a foster daughter of the Spevaks, and at one time spent a night in their home... She pointed out the house to two male friends, and one of the friends suggested robbing it ...
Her arrest came one day after the capture of the first suspect, Peiro Fuentes Hernandez, 21, who is not related to Angela Hernandez.
Fuentes Hernandez, who was said in court to be a refugee from El Salvador after Hurricane Mitch in 1998, also told police that he was a member of the MC Gang, known as Master Criminals, an affiliate of STC, or Street Thug Criminals . ..
The document spells out the results of the police search: In [Fuentes] Hernandez's bedroom, police found a photograph of Virginia Spevak under the mattress. ... they found Michael Spevak's driver's license and credit cards. .. a key to the Spevaks' front door... bloodstained tennis shoes. ... a sharp, curved blade with a wooden handle.
Yesterday, through his lawyer, Arthur Ago, he pleaded not guilty.
Arguing that Hernandez should not be kept jailed, Ago said the defendant had come from El Salvador "to seek protection here" and had many family members in the area. He also said Hernandez had no known criminal record.
... The judge said Hernandez posed "a very, very significant risk of flight" and ordered him held.

What a brilliant idea. The lawyer could let him stay in his guest room. And give him a job babysitting his children.

if he’s such a sweet angel why doesn’t the lawyer vouch for him and hire him to babysit at his house?
I don’t think Hernandez should be in jail either. Kill him. Then he dosen’t have to be in jail.
Very sad story.
Why would Hernandez flee?
The State of Washington is not going to give him the treatment he deserves...
His killer-loving lawyer should also be in jail.
This is D.C. not Washington state. I don’t know which one is worse, but D.C. is Third World hellhole because they allow the criminals to roam free.
A ironically tragic fate for two people who worked in earnest to help the very sort of social misfits who murdered them:
And liberals believe we should be defenseless in our homes?
They wonder why we become sarcastic when the intruder is only wounded in the leg.....
Yesterday I called my elderly great-aunt, who is in her 90s. She lives in a working class black area of DC and mentioned these murders to me. She also said how college kids were getting attacked while jogging, and various other crimes. We laughed about whether she should rent out a room for the inauguration, but she became serious as she talked about feeling like a target, not having anyone but relatives over to the house, etc.
It's sad that people can live their whole lives minding their business and contributing to society and become the victim of some idiot. I realize that neighborhoods change over time, but what I got from her was a general feeling of impending doom and that there were criminals everywhere, just waiting for you to show your vulnerability. This is not the DC I grew up in.
I cringe every time I think about it. I disagree with much of the liberal mindset. But no matter how naive they may have been, to see two people who worked so hard to help others get this in return makes my blood boil.
And it doesnt help that the key perp appears to be illegal.

Me too. I probably would have disagreed with this couple on every conceivable issue of economics, the environment and social policy. But no matter how naïve and misguided their political views, they obviously were sincere and had the best of intentions. Prayers for their loved ones.
