It's tough times for Tokyo's 160,000 restaurants. Industry analysts say 2008 will be a record-breaker for the number of restaurant bankruptcies. Kayabuki says sure, it's relying on a gimmick. But that gimmick is keeping them open.
Because of my monkeys, we get all kinds of customers, says the tavern owner. We're not affected by the economic downturn.
They're even bringing in tourists from around the globe.
It's crazy.
THE FENNERS, FROM ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN, SAW THE WAITER MONKEYS ON YOUTUBE AND JUST HAD TO SEE IT FOR THEMSELVES AS PART OF THEIR TOKYO VACATION.
NOT EXACTLY SOMETHING THEY'D SEE BACK HOME.
No I don't think they'd allow it. I see absolutely nothing wrong with it but the animal, what would be the word, rights people, probably wouldn't allow it.
THE OWNER GETS AROUND THAT BY WORKING HIS PET MONKEYS ONLY TWO HOURS A DAY.
HEALTH DEPARTMENT INSPECTORS GAVE THIS THE GREEN LIGHT, AS LONG AS THE MONKEYS WEAR CLOTHES, SAYS OTSUKA.
NOW THEY'RE A NIGHTLY FIXTURE...
EVEN HELPING TO ANSWER THE PHONE.
ALL THEY ASK IS A SOYBEAN OR TWO FROM CUSTOMERS-- WHO ARE EATING UP THE MONKEY SHOW AND THE TAVERNS' DAILY DISHES.
AND FOR ONE RESTAURANT SURVIVING A GLOBAL ECONOMIC SLOWDOWN...
THAT'S SOMETHING TO CHEER ABOUT.

It’s only fair that the Japanese have monkeys as waiters because we have baboons as politicians.

You're right. This is the beginning of the end.

I guess it is better work than being a trunk monkey:

Having a monkey butler isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I have 3 rules of life that have served me well. I have tried to hand these simple principles down to my children and grandchildren:
1. Never touch a monkey
2. Never let a monkey touch you
3. Never join a religion that was started by a science fiction writer
Works for me.

..several years ago on my very first trip to a jungle safari park we got to know these little waiters close up and personal. As you drove your car through the park and stop to look at the critters they would “mount” your auto, and besides ripping your vinyl roof off with their extra sharp teeth, they were adapted at performing obscene performances on the hood of your car. They seem to like the passenger side better,(for the females passengers).
It didn't take me long to try to find out how adapt they were at doing back flips while rolling backwards off the car when I suddenly hits the brakes. Amazingly they were pretty good at grabbing the antenna with one hand, so you had to time it just right. All this with a constant OMG, OMG, OMG, going around in the background...*grins*
