Get a standard-sized, field-bred poodle (originally bred to retrieve ducks from water in Germany). You can find a breeder in Gun Dog Magazine.
They’re just as good at retrieving ducks as Labs and a whole hell’uva lot smarter. Field poodles don’t need the sissy-clip jobs with which the tiny lap poodles are cursed.

Either we have a really smart dog that knows how to turn off a safety on a shotgun and pull the trigger or we have a really dumb 23 year old male that leaves his shotgun laying in the bottom of the boat with the safety off.

I opted for a chest freezer instead of a Hunting Gun (I dont hunt I cook) hope my 3 Labs dont conspire to toss me in the freezer. /kidding...
