...I’ve been in commercial, residential construction for 30 years as a sub-contractor. I’m back to shoveling and sweeping sh-t for $7 an hour. My picture will be on the cover of Dummies. I should have stayed in college...

The small business administration has lots of material. Some of it is actually readable and it is FREE. The Chambers of Commerce around the country have stuff too. If there is a SCORE chapter in your area try and find a retiree who has experience in the type of business you want to start. Lastly there are many consultants for business - many bad ones and many good ones. I charge an outrageous fee for my services but they are in some very narrow field that not many people know anything about. I will give you a free tip. You are always the last to get paid.

Sell Drugs your customers will get the money to pay for them the same way Congress does; they will steal it. Plus you'll be the life of the party and if you do it right you'll be famous. Before you laugh at me,I ask you who doesn't want to be rich and famous? If you want to open a business that's legal be prepared to work lots of hours for little money, little appreciation and lots of headaches and paperwork.

You’re putting the cart before the horse. You have to become very good at something first - the best at what you do. Starting a business to reap the benefits comes afterwards. Beware of all the current radio ads that offer to help you start a business.

Avoid using a lot of credit and credit lines. That’s what I’m dealing with now.
Even if you have savings, you ‘will’ underestimate your expenses needed to start any business. Do your best to model these ahead of time. And if needed, put off starting until you think you’ve got the money in the bank.
‘Starting a business for Dummies Book?’
You don’t need a book. You need to work through what’s called a ‘business plan’.
Look online for a typical business plan document. Microsoft has a business plan template that’s extensive and will help you think through your ideas. You have to spend a lot of time upfront in business modeling and planning. Otherwise, you’ll end up in debt quickly. Don’t underestimate; overestimate your expenses and underestimate your projected income. Find out where your breakeven points are.
