LANCASTER [CALIFORNIA} - County Animal Control officers have concluded a two-month effort to crack down on pit bulls, an effort that led to nearly 100 citations and the rounding up of more than 150 canines. The crackdown was initiated in September by Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, whose 5th District includes the Antelope Valley.
Antonovich was responding to complaints raised by the City Council concerning the number of pit bull-related injuries in Lancaster.
Councilmembers were advised Nov. 12 that county Animal Control officers had raided 42 illegal kennels, investigated 87 pit bull owners for possible inhumane treatment, investigated 118 dogs in possession of "owners at large," researched ownership of 165 dogs and impounded 163 pit bulls found running loose in the city.
Officers ultimately issued 95 citations for alleged ownership violations, said Derek Brown, deputy director of shelter operations for the county's Department of Animal Care and Control.
During the crackdown, officers patrolled city parks, searched abandoned houses and worked with bus, school and Postal Service officials to locate potentially dangerous pit bulls, Brown said.
Since councilmembers voiced their concerns, Animal Control officers "have been working diligently to focus on problems relating to pit bulls," he said.
While sweeping the city for that particular breed, the officers found and investigated problems related to other dangerous breeds, Brown said.
Some owners were given warnings, others were given citations and some dogs were impounded, which further reduced the risk of dog attacks in the community, he said.
To avoid future attacks, the department embarked on a program through which residents could alert officers to locations that posed potential dog-related problems.

The rambling speculation and implied ad hominem in your comment #19 is the kind of public relations needed for eradicating the problem. In fact, nearly all of the arguments from the kind of people who favor pit bulls is revealing enough.
And, I do favor pit bulls, and I am not ashamed of my defense of the breed.
You are really defensive aren't you? I couldn't care less that you are against owning pit bulls. The last I checked, this is STILL America, and I am free to own the pet of my choice, barring any laws preventing me from doing so, and providing I exercise personal and moral responsibility for my animals. So, sorry to disappoint ya, but there's no criminal here. I guess I fall into the kook territory, at least according to you.
Oh, there are several other pit bull owners on FR, and they are some very fine people. According to you they are all either kooks or criminals. I guess I am in good company. Talk about a broad brush.
Nothing I said at all could be construed as a contribution to the cause of eradicating this breed.
Well, I'm not, and you telling me I should be doesn't change a thing. Most of the arguments contributed by pit bull owners are also contributing to the eradication of the breed and any alternatives for bullying neighbor kids that might be chosen by the owners later on.
Bullshit.
There’s nothing “truly amazing” or surprising at all about the behavior of the dogs or of the cop in the situation. Those dogs should have been killed on first sight, before they even threatened anyone. No human being should put up with the probability of being threatened by a breed (nearly always a “loving family pet” in known attacks) that has killed and maimed so many. Anyone who incites fear in their more reasonable neighbors in any way should be punished.
Criminals use pit bulls to disturb the peace of others by creating a situation where assault and/or murder are more possible and unpredictable.
Like it or not, owners of pit-bull-like dogs devised their own reputation for being trashy or incompetent. They should be blacklisted.

Maybe they like “puppy-mills”...
Just to relate a personal anecdote, the Hispanic neighbor across the alley from us didn’t seem to be able to contain their sweet, harmless, lovable pit bull in their back yard.
One day when the neighbors weren’t home and the adorable canine was roaming the neighborhood, my daughter finally called the county Animal Control, who came and took their cute little doggy away.
I imagine Fido has been decompressed by now, because there is no longer a wonderful pit bull wandering the neighborhood looking for someone to shower its affections upon.
The End
LOL, there you go again, killer!

PleaseNoMore, don't bother with this fellow. He's got a preternatural fascination with killing dogs, as well as playing internet tough guy. Every pit bull thread he stalks, he regales everyone with his bloody fantasies.
He is quite disturbed, judging by his postings here.
I've fought full contact, bounced in four clubs (country dance hall type), been a bodyguard, light combat engineer and patrolman in a mobbed-up city. ...sworn and worked to defend all levels of government at various times. We don't have to put up with neighbors who feel like they need pit bulls to bother others.
Hey familyop, what's you favorite dog killing load? I'm guessing you're a big-bore kinda guy, like Chuck there. Maybe a Wildey 45 Win Mag?

Some dogs just need killin'.
And some people are just sick twisted clowns.
You don't know the half of it, LOL!
Thankfully.
Sorry, but I’m calling BS on your “story”.
*IF* four dogs of ANY breed “broke through the boards in a fence to attack you and your babies...
WHY or WHAT about the pickup truck stopped them from EATING all of you?
Your story doesn’t pass the reality test, FRiend. My 14”tall peke/pom/sheltie quite easily jumps into the back of pickup trucks. The 130 lb smooth collies jump OVER the gate of the same trucks.
Held hostage by pitbulls my hairy patoot. Attempt at DRAMA QUEEN is what I see here. FEH!
Better luck nest time with your fable
Now doesn’t it figure that your posting of an APBT shows up as the dreaded “red X”?
DAYUM!
Agreed! Better than taking a chance of being mauled!
