LANCASTER [CALIFORNIA} - County Animal Control officers have concluded a two-month effort to crack down on pit bulls, an effort that led to nearly 100 citations and the rounding up of more than 150 canines. The crackdown was initiated in September by Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, whose 5th District includes the Antelope Valley.

Antonovich was responding to complaints raised by the City Council concerning the number of pit bull-related injuries in Lancaster.

Councilmembers were advised Nov. 12 that county Animal Control officers had raided 42 illegal kennels, investigated 87 pit bull owners for possible inhumane treatment, investigated 118 dogs in possession of "owners at large," researched ownership of 165 dogs and impounded 163 pit bulls found running loose in the city.

Officers ultimately issued 95 citations for alleged ownership violations, said Derek Brown, deputy director of shelter operations for the county's Department of Animal Care and Control.

During the crackdown, officers patrolled city parks, searched abandoned houses and worked with bus, school and Postal Service officials to locate potentially dangerous pit bulls, Brown said.

Since councilmembers voiced their concerns, Animal Control officers "have been working diligently to focus on problems relating to pit bulls," he said.

While sweeping the city for that particular breed, the officers found and investigated problems related to other dangerous breeds, Brown said.

Some owners were given warnings, others were given citations and some dogs were impounded, which further reduced the risk of dog attacks in the community, he said.

To avoid future attacks, the department embarked on a program through which residents could alert officers to locations that posed potential dog-related problems.

"During the period from September to present, we conducted 59 Neighborhood Safety programs," Brown said, describing the effort as "a proactive approach whereby, rather than waiting for a pit bull to attack or escape or cause injury to a person or animal, concerned citizens could call us up and indicate that there is a potential safety problem."

...effort to crack down on pit bulls...

While illegal aliens in California gently weep for legal status.

Banging head on wall....

There’s about four groups of folks on my block whom I strongly suspect are illegal aliens — but none of them have jumped the fence yet and run across the street to bite me.

If illegal aliens are less of a concern than rouge pit bulls because illegals don't bite, I'm off to contemplating banging head against wall again.

That is so true. I am for limited government but this is one area that is troubling to me. My 3 kids (one in a stroller) and I were out for a walk and a pit bull BROKE through the boards in the fence to get at us. That dog plus three others held us hostage in the back of a pickup truck for twenty minutes until the police got there. I was praying the whole time and my kids were crying. I kept thinking the police were going to show up in the after math of whatever happened. The dogs tried to attack the police officer that came to help us and then the mailman (while we were in the back of the cruiser). The owners were home the whole time and did nothing until animal control came to get their dogs. All of us except the baby are still battling a fear of dogs.

I think the point is that this is two different issues. Each one needs to be dealt with but again two different issures.

Dependence on others ALWAYS leads one to be held hostage.

A handgun license, 4 shots, and personal judgment in making a phone call leads to personal contentment.

I dont always carry. I had walked this neighborhood many times and didnt feel the need. I did have my cell and I called the police. Even if I had my gun with me I had to get my children to safety first. There were four dogs. It was the grace of God alone that the dogs didnt attack us. If they had decided to attack a handgun wouldnt have prevented all four. Believe me, I am all about personal responsibility but that was one day I was thankful for the brave police officer that carried my kids to his cruiser that day.

File a police report. This is actually assault and you can have the dog taken away. If you were touched by the dog, you could file a civil case against the owners. You could probably find a trial lawyer in LA who would file the case just based on the fear your children experienced.

Pit Bulls are great dogs. Pit Bull owners are usually sh@thead, criminal, scumbag, wanna be thugs who think that by owning a dog who can fight means that they can fight. I feel very bad for these dogs because they are being turned into violent offenders. Pit Bulls are great guard dogs. They are great with kids. But because of their physical strength they are capable of being deadly. Chihuahuas are more likely to bite you but they can’t kill your kid.

I’m for jailing a lot more pit bull owners and getting those poor dogs out to rescues who can help them recover and become happy, well adjusted pets for someone who isn’t a criminal. There are lots of pit bull rescues because of the type of people you live next to.

You as a human tote the ability of reason that animals don't.

Animals are just plain stupid when it comes to reasonable thought.

Humans shouldn't strive to tote animal intelligence.....

"Animals are just plain stupid when it comes to reasonable thought."

...and fickle, at times. Some "loving pets" are more dangerous than others when they attack people. Some dangerous, and sooner or later, unpredictable animals are very popular with people who want to have them for harassing and scaring neighbors.

I'm not sure I am understanding your experience. You said the dogs broke through a fence to get at you, but that they didn't attack you, but rather pinned you against a truck bed? Am I correct? That's very strange that the dogs were so aggressive that they broke through a wooden fence, but did not physically attack. And there were four of them? It is amazing that their pack mentality didn't "kick in".

Even more amazing is, considering the grave threat to his safety, and yours, the police officer had the means to eliminate the threat and didn't do so. You'd think the police officer would have shot one or more of the dogs, knowing the dogs had menaced you, and then went on to attack the mailman while you were both still on the scene.
