Wilmington, NC (AHN) - Five sheriff's deputies will be disciplined after two undercover deputies zapped a North Carolina man with a Taser while he was serving as a pall bearer at his father's funeral and loading the coffin into a hearse.
Another pall bearer said the incident was so frightening that the other pall bearers nearly dropped the casket of 70-year-old Gladwyn Taft Russ Jr., who was being buried with military honors.
New Hanover County Sheriff's deputies were trying to serve a warrant on the dead man's son, Gladwyn Taft Russ III, on charges of communicating a threat to his ex-wife, who lives in another state.
The threat was allegedly made on Aug. 6 and the warrant was issued on Aug. 7.
Russ III, 42, had allegedly threatened to kill his wife, who lives in another state. Deputies were supposed to wait until after the funeral was over. However, the two detectives dressed in coats and ties, who had not identified themselves to anyone as being law enforcement, decided to serve the warrant before the burial.
During the scuffle, one of the deputies' guns fell out of its holster and onto the ground. The alarmed mourners didn't know the armed men were law enforcement officials and some of them fled the funeral in fear.
Where are the COPS producers when you need them .....
Oops...meant to add:
“Russ was charged with threatening to kill his wife. He’s now being held at the local jail.”
Please tell me there was a tacky aunt filming the funeral who got this captured on video.
More like 911 Las vegas...
Idiots. The dumbass ran his mouth months ago and the warrant was issued months ago so the genius cops taser the man at a funeral. Sheesh.
Years back while I was serving time for drunk driving the judge gave me a one day furlough to go to my grandmother’s funeral.
OK, the worst I did was ask a process server to serve the adverse party in a child support case at the bedside of his dying father. The adverse party was a 300 pound trucker. I heard about that from Dwight the process server. LOL
Not sure what 911 Las Vegas is, TV? I don’t watch TV other than Rich Steves travel and Dancing With The Stars ... too much time studying ....
Anyway, more examples of how under trained LEO’s are ....
Oh good grief!
Sounds like the Sherrif’s office is in need of some adult supervision.Just lucky for the cops that someone in the group of mourners didn’t have stroke or heart attack, the law suits would have been very impressive.
You have to wonder where they get those people ... I wanted to make a t-shirt that said “Stopped By A Cop And Survived” but thought better of the idea ... they’re starting to scare me. I’ve been reading a lot of their goofs some tragic ....seems like the first thing to do when coming to a residence is to shoot the family dog ....
No doubt it was planned. "Hey, wouldn't it be a gas if we tasered the son as he's carrying his dad's casket? lol...maybe they'll even drop the sumbitch."
If arrested, don’t be alarmed by the steel cage in the car between you and the driver. It’s there for YOUR protection.
LOL :)
Good point ....
Sorry, I meant “Reno 911”, a spoof parody comedy about “Cops”. Basically situations where the screw-ups are like these two keystone Alumni here.
I most often tend to side with cops but idiots like these don’t make it easy.
Oh yeah, I remember the previews of that show ... never watched it though .... thanks ...
In before some idiot cop said “I would have shot him for real”.
They shoulda tasered the father, as well.
