Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 12, 2008 - pantheon
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 11/12/2008 | The Slacker

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

pantheon • \PAN-thee-ahn\ • noun
1. a temple dedicated to all the gods; also the gods of a people
2. a group of illustrious persons *

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:

With his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame, the former player joined a pantheon of legends from the sport.

Did you know?
Some of the earliest uses of this word in the English language refer to that most famous Pantheon, the circular domed temple built in Rome more than 19 centuries ago (and still standing). We can easily identify the origins of the temple's name, which the Romans borrowed from the Greek word for a temple honoring all their gods. That Greek word, “pantheion,” combines “pan-” ("all") and “theos” ("god"). Later on, in English, "all the gods" was used to mean just that -- a pantheon could be a collective of gods (as "the Egyptian pantheon"). We stop short of worshiping outstanding men and women as actual gods, of course, but nevertheless, in the 19th century we also began using “pantheon” as a word for any eminent company of the highly venerated.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

A ten-ho nap? Now I’ve heard everything!

You mean you had already heard of the "one-ho nap," the "two-ho nap," on up to the "nine-ho nap?"

I got a feeling Tuberville won’t beat the Tide for the SEVENTH time in a row this year.

My friend, the LSU graduate was distraught.

My sympathy, empathy and compassion for the LSU grad friend who is distraught. That was one hell of a game!!!! No shame there for anyone. LSU came closer than anyone else this year to spankin' us badly and they deserve tremendous respect for a fantastic game.

Tuberville will NOT, I repeat, NOT beat the Tide again... EVER!! You mark Nov. 29th on your calendar. When the tide starts to roll and the elephants start to stampede, you're gonna think the heavens have opened fire!!

I have all this on good authority from the angels camped upon my shoulder.

Now that’s an idea...no, no! I can’t say that, it’s not very lady-like. You are leading me down the slippery slope into the abyss of rival hatred.

Actually there are rumors abounding that he’ll be leaving Auburn soon. But, you know how rumors are in college football and polititcs!

"As I’ve told a few people, football is all we have right now!"

And much, much too soon it will be over.

Since the one who must not be named will be around for four years, there should be a new federal law changing college football to a year round sport during "its" term.

You'll note I am not allowing for a re-election!!!

That is just SICK................

However, after all my years of driving the beer cart for various tournaments, I can see how it is an excellent idea!

That is funny.....which reminds me, I was at the park the other day and a nursing mom put the blanket over her shoulder and I never saw her do another thing so I’m assuming the kid knew how to unbutton, unhook and latch on all by herself. Maybe it is time to try a sippee cup.....

Nick Saban is the current coach. At this time, we are currently ranked #1. WooHoo

Is that the same guy that held a press conference saying he wasn't leaving his current coaching job one day and then held a press conference to say he was leaving his current coaching job for a new coaching job the next day?

Not that I’m biased or anything...and the great Bear Bryant also coached at Texas A&M, another feather in his famous houndstooth hat.

Bear Bryant left A&M to go to Alabama
Dennis Franchione left Alabama to go to A&M
I think Alabama got the better end of the deal both times.

Of course, at the time Alabama fans whined about the way Dennis left them high and dry, and I had no sympathy for them given the classless way Alabama and Franchione handled the interview and hiring process when Franchione took the job in the first place by insisting that it had to be completed immediately even before the season was over where Franchione was coaching at TCU. The whining reminded me very much of the clueless bimbo that screws around with a married man, gets him to leave his wife, and then is shocked and stunned when he subsequently cheats on her.

Football is a fun topic right now, since our Titans are doing remarkably well, but how about hockey? Our extended road schedule, that has been a nightmare for the fans, finally gave us something to cheer about last night when we beat the Sharks, at their podunk tank, in OT. I was the last one awake to watch it and paid for it today. If I’d known it was going to be that good, I would’ve grabbed a no-ho nap earlier!

I couldn’t stand Coach Fran from the get-go because I didn’t like the way he came to A&M. I never trusted him, he never produced, and he left in shame as he deserved.
