In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
pantheon \PAN-thee-ahn\ noun
1. a temple dedicated to all the gods; also the gods of a people
2. a group of illustrious persons *
* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.
Example sentence:
With his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame, the former player joined a pantheon of legends from the sport.
Did you know?
Some of the earliest uses of this word in the English language refer to that most famous Pantheon, the circular domed temple built in Rome more than 19 centuries ago (and still standing). We can easily identify the origins of the temple's name, which the Romans borrowed from the Greek word for a temple honoring all their gods. That Greek word, pantheion, combines pan- ("all") and theos ("god"). Later on, in English, "all the gods" was used to mean just that -- a pantheon could be a collective of gods (as "the Egyptian pantheon"). We stop short of worshiping outstanding men and women as actual gods, of course, but nevertheless, in the 19th century we also began using pantheon as a word for any eminent company of the highly venerated.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

no, that’s plenty. but i do know enough to know that Whyisa’s RED RAIDERS are breathing down ya’ll’s necks there with the same record and a #2 ranking : )
Sorry Whyisa, I forgot to copy you on the last post...
You got that right, and the Raiders are a fantastic foe!!!
I say that in all sincerity and not just to keep Whyisa from kickin my butt. There is no rhyme or reason to the ratings, although I must say I love Bama being ranked first...at least for this week.
All the good college football is in the South. Not that I’m biased or anything...and the great Bear Bryant also coached at Texas A&M, another feather in his famous houndstooth hat.
A ten-ho nap? Now I’ve heard everything!
Even if we beat Oklahoma, which of course everyone knows will end life as we know it, they will find some way to say "well they still have to beat Baylor" - then it will be "oh the Big 12 championship game will wipe them out"
It's kind of fun being the underdog and then wiping the turf with the big boys.....
Only the SEC and Big 12 have divided divisions that have to play a "playoff" game to win their conference - so it is almost like playing a championship game prior to bowl season.
Good luck LakeLady - Florida, for you, will be like us playing Texas, then Oklahoma state, then Oklahoma, then Missouri.
Do you play Oklahoma this weekend? I’m afraid we lulled them into a false sense of superiority last weekend.
No, we have off this weekend, as does Oklahoma - to prepare... the refs.
I will be rooting for Red Raiders along with the Red Tide, but puleeeeze, don’t tell a soul. Even my dogs would ostracize me if they knew.
Good luck to y’all and keep the faith. Your team has been fantastic and will continue to be so.
I try not to be an obnoxious Bama Babe, but it’s been sooooooo long since we had a Bear type season, it just shouts out sometimes.
As I’ve told a few people, football is all we have right now!
God spare us that.
no wonder i feel so bereft! ; )
Truly, I”m not sure how you get out of bed in the morning... ;^)
Ball State, fourteenth in the nation, and moving up. How weird/cool is that?
while i don’t have your euphoric highs when the team wins, i am better off without the horrible lows of a loss. believe me, i live with someone whose outlook on life is colored by sports and i don’t think it’s healthy!!!
I have enjoyed seeing the Mountain West move up a bit as well. After the Boise State win over OU a few years ago I began to watch their division a bit.
I know - my blood pressure is dangerously high during a game - if my boys only realized how much it means to me they would score faster and more often so I wouldn’t have to worry....
Boise State was very good for me, they covered almost every game for 2 years, back in the day.
Who are you thinking for the Heisman? We have two players in the running right now - if we can beat OU I think Harrell has a good shot at it -
