One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Brought Back to Life
Biblical Archaeology Review ^ | November 6, 2008 | unattributed

One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is set to be resurrected in Selcuk, Turkey. The famous Temple of Artemis was built at the expense of the Lydian king Karun in the 7th century B.C. Its architecture included 120 columns and 25,000 cubic meters of marble. The massive structure was dedicated to Artemis, the Greek goddess of virginity, fertility and the hunt. The original temple was destroyed during the early period of Christianity in Anatolia. In 2007, the Artemis Culture, Arts, and Education Foundation, was founded with the objective of rebuilding the ancient temple approximately 1,500 meters away from its original location. The project, which is projected to cost $150 million, is set to begin as soon as the official permission for the land allocation is granted.

Dr. Atilay Ileri, the founder of the Selcuk Artemis Culture, Arts and Education Foundation, intends to choose sculptors from the 196 U.N. member countries. They will take part in workshops provided by the Foundation, and eventually two sculptures created in the workshops will be chosen by a committee to be featured in the temple. "When the temple is completed," says Ileri, "the workshops will start serving as a school of sculpture. Selcuk will be the center of world sculpture."

The Turkish Daily News reports on the plans to resurrect the ancient Temple of Artemis.

Which comes first?

Wiccans holding a sit-in to allowed to ‘worship’ there; or, GLBT groups demanding the right to hold toga parties in it?

I also wonder how soon B.O. will go there to install Michelle as Queen of Heaven, and declare himself Moloch.

Some historians think they are dates or even bull testicles

That would be one strange way to carry the entre to an oyster roast.

a). This is WICKED cool. Take *THAT* you stupid Goths.

b). Has anyone thought about earthquakes?

c). I’m a little disappointed they are not using modern building materials to reduce costs and increase safety. Concrete has come a looooooooong way and is practically a miracle material now. I fear they are asking for trouble by using marble.

d). The Lighthouse of Alexandria or The Colossus of Rhodes would also be fantastic to see reconstructed.

The original temple was destroyed during the early period of Christianity in Anatolia.

Now that they have practically rid the country of christianity, they can rebuild their pagan temple.

“Now that they have practically rid the country of christianity, they can rebuild their pagan temple.”

And it could serve as a reminder to the rest of us of what The Faith saved us from! :)

I have seen that statue, tho I think they are not sure they are breasts. Some historians think they are dates or even bull testicles

They're water balloons. It was a game played with darts. Doesn't translate well in stone, but hey.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria

I believe that it is soon to be rebuilt. The have already recreated the great Library of Alexandria, unfortunately without its original contents.

Thanks Red_Devil 232! A keeper. The competition for such construction was substantial in the region.

My first thought was, how long will this replica stand before some jihadist blows it up?

When I was a youngster, I thought it would be great to reconstruct the Colossus of Rhodes, and still do. Much later I read that the statue didn’t bestride the harbor entrance, but rather stood on the one side. It was only up for fifty years or so, then tipped over in an earthquake. It remained a major tourist attraction, even in ruins, until medieval times, uh, that is, after the Moslem takeover. It was sold for scrap.

If I were going to redo it, I’d not want to be authentic, just to have the statue bestride the harbor entrance, which is actually how it has often been depicted anyway. :’)

Artemis (Diana) was thought to be the ancient Mediterraenean mother goddess with the multiple breasts...

Unlike normal women who have only one breast.
