Obama's chief of staff choice favors compulsory universal service
Charlotte Examiner ^ | 11-6-2008 | J.D. Tuccille

Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, President-Elect Barack Obama's choice for chief of staff in his incoming administration, is co-author of a book, The Plan: Big Ideas for America, that calls for, among other things, compulsory service for all Americans ages 18 to 25

Emanuel and co-author Bruce Reed insist "this is not a draft," but go on to write of young men and women, "the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service." They also warn, "[s]ome Republicans will squeal about individual freedom," ruling out any likelihood that they would let people opt out of universal citizen service.

What does “Republicans squeeling about individual freedoms” have to do with allowing opt-out?

Maybe I’m missing the point.

From Wikipedia:

Corvée is labour, often but not always unpaid, that persons in power have authority to compel their subjects to perform, unless commuted in some way such as by a cash payment; sometimes this was an option of the payer, sometimes of the payee, and sometimes not an option. It differs from chattel slavery in that the worker is not owned outright – being free in various respects other than in the dispensation of his or her labour – and the work is usually intermittent; typically only a certain number of days’ or months’ work is required each year. It is a form of unfree labour when the worker is not compensated. It is not technically a tax as there is no actual obligation to pay cash or a physical good such as wheat, but – particularly with a commutation option – it operates very much like a tax for all intents and purposes, usually a poll tax.

According to Wiki, Corvee was used in the South after the Civil War when paying taxes with cash was difficult for many. Instead, they provided labor.

The democrats will simply ignore the 13th amendment. If memory serves, the democrats voted unanomously against it.

This a perfect example of projection. Last election I recall all the buzz among the dim youts was W will bring back the draft if he is reelected. The idea was to scare yout population at large. Of course 4 years later here we finally are with surprise.....a quasi non military draft proposal.

Gosh, I hope not. But then I didn't think America would elect a Marxist, either.

This already exists... It’s called the department of corrections.

Very astute of you and well-put.

Someone correct me if I am wrong in my assertion that Rahm is a draft dodger.

Obama youth is in the works

May very well be.

However, I remain optimistic that the youth of today will not put up with having their toys or 85% or more of their income be made to disappear by various governments.

They were raised and currently exist in privelege and they will not give it up. They may go undergound or resist before they fight, but they will eventually fight.

3 months of service?
You can’t do anything in 3 months except indoctrinate and train.
I guess this is how Comrade O is planning to slip in his re-education camps hoping nobody will notice.

The Volokh Conspiracy’s Jim Lindgren examines Barack Obama’s plan for middle and high school students to do 50 hours of community service as part of his “civilian national security force.” While one can quibble with whether community service (as it is commonly thought of) is comparable to national security, Obama’s chosen mechanism is troubling. Since, as Lindgren points out in the comments:http://volokh.com/posts/1219902544.shtml#421553
