Talk about burying the political hatchet, even Senator Ben Nelson is ready to recommend Chuck Hagel for a promotion.
Hagel's name is making the rounds for a slot in the Obama White House, and Nelson tells me Hagel has excellent foreign policy credentials. The cabinet slot most associated with Hagel is Secretary of Defense

I threw up a little ..in my mouth...just now..
Why would anyone in the military want to work for a defeatist who won’t back them up?
I wonder if he’ll decide that the Obama Administration is ‘too far to the left’ and endorse the Republican candidate a few days before the next election.
Hagel needs to jump off a cliff.
I didn’t know Secretary of Disloyalty was a cabinet post.
I wonder if hell decide that the Obama Administration is too far to the left and endorse the Republican candidate a few days before the next election.
Only if that guy is ahead and can give him a job in that administration.
Hagel’s foreign policy credentials are more appropriate for Bizmark’s Germany than for the United States nearly a century and a half later.
Chuck Hagel as Secretary of State? His vast knowledge of international affairs can be filled onto a 5x8 card. He only looks good because the rest of the senate are absolute idiots and can’t even tell you where Mongolia is located. It would be a 3rd-rate state department with this guy around, and I doubt he’d last more than two years. Course, the positive is that he might accidentally sell Omaha wheat and beef to some Japanese folks as part of some vast US program.
We just voted on his replacement..Johanns (R).
Would Hagle act as a secretary of defense to a President who desires female infantrymen and Gay Pride Day at Fort Bragg?
Funny, yesterday afternoon I was sitting in a restaurant in Las Vegas when their big screen TV (tuned to CNN, of course) started an interview with Colin Powell and his elation at the Obama win. All I could think was, "You f'in backstabber." What's funny is I how close I came to yelling it out loud ...in a very full restaurant.
My one hope is that Obama will at least pick a Sec Def who, while he may be a RINO, won’t allow the troops to be put in a precarious position tactically. Strategy is one thing, but if they withdraw from Iraq I at LEAST pray someone will ensure it is done properly and not turn into a national nightmare in terms of loss of life.
While I am ticked at Powell, I do think he would be able to stop Obama from doing something that would cause a logistical disaster. Again, strategy is another matter. But if nothing else, at least ensure the safety of the troops. If he appoints some professorial type we are even more screwed than we already are.
Hagel might be bad enough to engender a military coup. Now there’s an idea....
Governor is Republican, generally conservative. No one around here will be sorry to see Hagel gone from the Senate. Johanns (former governor, Sect’y of Agriculture under Dubya’s 2nd term) will be the new Senator.
Some local magazine came in the mail or newspaper the other day, with a big face photo of Hagel on the cover. I have no idea what it was, it went straight to the recycling bin. I was afraid to touch it any more than absolutely necessary.
So did I - Saturday night, during a first quarter of a - oh never mind, no game, no game, bad dream, bad dream. I wish I could wake up from this nightmare.
Picking Hagel would be like selecting Rahm Emanuel--a signal to Republicans that bipartisanship was just a slogan to fool people before the election, but that he plans to stick it to the Republicans every chance he gets.
You’re all nuts.
Kucinich will be the first Secretary of the “Department of Peace.”
Hagel decided to retire from the Senate the day after he discovered he was nine points behind any GOP challenger. He will not be missed.
Our new senator is Mike Johanns who was governor when George W. tapped him for Secy of Agriculture. He was replaced by Lt. Gov. Dave Hineman, a rural southeast Nebraskan, who is dependably conservative.
