How do I get rid of Quicktime?
Posted on 11/01/2008 5:59:54 PM PDT by ml/nj
I stupidly downloaded and installed Quicktime on my XP PC so I could view the Piel Bros Commercials someone linked to today. Quicktime insists on being started automatically when I boot and I don't want this. So I removed (via Control Panel) the Quicktime program. Still I got warnings that Quicktime was trying to insert itself in my Startup list, so I searched for everything with "Quick" in the filename and got rid of those. I rebooted. I'm still getting warnings that Quicktime wants to insert itself in my Startup list. The only other thing I can think of is a lawsuit against Apple, but that would be messy. Anyone have any other suggetions?

Every time I have put Quick time on my XT, it puts so
much junk that I have to spend hours cleaning it out.

Dumped ITunes a long, long time ago. Now I have manageable Malware ;-)

“start - run - msconfig - qttask (uncheck it)”
That will leave windows messages saying that you are using a system config... etc.
Easiest thing by far is to use the Quicktime uninstaller or Windows ad/remove programs tool.
Worse comes to worse, search for the quicktime directory and delete that. Restart. Then use a registry cleaner (like Wise Registry Cleaner— Download.com).
It should be gone.

if you use ITunes I have nothing to do with iTunes or iPods. I just need an MP3 player that lets me drag and drop as if the player's memory were a disk on my machine, and it's nice to be able to know I can change the battery if I want to. Apple really sucks. I'm surprised they have such a devoted following. (Sorta reminds me of a candidate I know.)

Oh yeah. While on Download.com search for Quicktime Alternative in downloads. Quicktime Alternative also includes a real player alternative so you can remove real player also!

I've done that now. We'll see what happens.
What surprises me is that the qttask shortcut is to a \ProgramFiles\Quicktime directory which I do not see. So I'm not sure if I've really gotten rid of anything. I'm on a different machine now. I'll worry about it tomorrow.

Windows defender sucks too. I found it eating up a reasonable fraction of my CPU. At least I was able to get rid of that one.
