Profanity on movie CBS showed
Posted on 10/26/2008 2:56:15 PM PDT by Sun
CBS showed the movie "Cinderella Man" at 8:00 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2008, and around 9:15 p.m., the movie showed taking the Lord's name in vein, and the Holy family, several times. This is inappropriate and should be illegal on the public's free airways. CBS could have easily cut that from what we thought was a family movie.

I wish more people understood this.

Whether you agree, or disagree, thanks for posts from folks with good manners.
As for those of you who are rude, and say things while hiding behind a computer that you would not say to a person’s face, well that is just plain pusillianimous.

“That’s the reason Mrs Bear and I rarely go to the Theater. I am still waiting for a chance to see An American Carol, but I dread that when I see it I’ll walk out due to a Rev Wrightism.
It was bad enough when was just the premium channels, now the networks have no standards. A few years ago, my wife and I got rid of every movie, cd and book that blasphemes God’s name.
Ignore the detractors, I’m glad I’m not the only one who takes this stand.”
Great post.
I’m afraid too many conservatives have been desensitized, and don’t even realize it.
And it is all done G-R-A-D-U-A-L-L-Y, just so they don’t know what’s happening.

Would you have absolutely NO LIMITS on the public’s free airways?

Sun, I hate to break it to you but when the top rated show of the last decade was the violent and profanity-laced Sopranos, it's a pretty good indication that social mores are changing. The broadcasters are just following suit.

But the Sopranos is not on the public’s free airways.
You have to pay for cable.
I don’t have cable, btw.

G-damn has been used on television since I was a child.
You must have freaked when you saw "Gone With the Wind." Frankly, my dear...
My advice to you: Don't watch television.

This was even worse than that, and used multiple times, in less than a minute.

This is a film about the ‘sport’ of boxing, an activity which has a culture which is at a very low level, barely above the criminal in some cases. To portray the fighters and their associates never using profanity, or obscenity, would break any possibility that the audience would consider it an honest portrayal of the subject.
To: Sun
I admire your concern about blasphemy on the airways, but believe that your best option would be to simply turn off your TV. Write to the sponsors if you wish, but I don't expect you will get much of a response.
BTW: The real life Jim Braddock was a Catholic who took the lord's name in vain, like most Catholics I know. We are all sinners, even this non-believer.

Would you have absolutely NO LIMITS on the publics free airways?I would prefer that no portrayals of actual murders or rapes be shown.
To: Sun
Was there a language warning when the movie started or coming back from commercial breaks? Or the little box in the corner involving a rating?
I would imagine CBS took steps to put you on notice of what would be in the movies. The other day FX ran their full warning before the end credits ran on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
And not much you can do, those aren't even among the
Seven Dirty Words.

But the Sopranos is not on the publics free airways. That doesn't negate the fact that it was a phenomenally popular show. The broadcasters know this and figure that if millions of people are paying money to watch a show like Sopranos then they can afford to loosen up their standards a little bit without running the risk of offending more than a small handful of viewers.

Did you
not know what Cinderella Man was about before you tuned in? Didya think that boxers would'nt use expletives? Sometimes the syntax used is as much a part of the story as the action. Sorry...but this one is a non-starter.
There are alot of things to get trully upset about right now...but 'this' is not it.
