Inexpensive laptop computer called Eee ( Manufactured by ASUS?) $299 looked pretty cool. Saw it in target today. Does any body have any experience with it?

On your Linux version: Is there anything else you needed to purchase with it...ie extra batteries, memory cards etc?? Also, is the Linux version less susceptible to viruses?

No additional accessories were required. I think my wife bought a mouse (and, of course, some thumbdrives for extra storage).

I never heard of any viruses which affect Linux computers, so yes, it’s less susceptible to them. :)

I might add in the slim chance you ever do get a Virus it costs nothing to do a clean install, and you can run a live CD version to pull off any data you wanted to save first.(Or a bootable memory stick in this particular case)

I spent $399 for a Toshiba with a Celeron M, 2 Gb Ram, 15” Wide-screen, Wireless, 120Gb Drive, etc... I Don't think the eeePC for $299 is worth it.

The Linux model seems pretty attractive. Are there any problems moving files between Linux and Windows or other shortcomings to consider?

I can’t think of any problems. There’s a lot of help on user forums. She sent me a document she wrong using Open Office and it had a strange font when I opened it on Windows (also using Open Office). That’s the only weird thing that’s happened.

Some video content doesn’t work properly, but most does. Programs written for Windows won’t run, obviously. The Eee PC is pretty limited, so you shouldn’t expect to load it up with software applications anyway. It’s a great mobile platform because it’s light, durable and cheap.

If you just want to use if for web stuff and basic office applications it works great.
