'South Park' going south
The Daily Iowan ^ | October 22, 2008 | Brian Dau

I was watching the latest episode of "South Park" the other day when a sobering thought occurred to me. When this ridiculous animated satire about four elementary schoolers from Colorado first aired in 1997, I was just starting the sixth grade. It's enough to make one feel downright elderly. (Also, it's much more socially acceptable to admit you watch cartoons when you are 11 years old.)

Now in the middle of a 12th season, "South Park," like its audience, has changed dramatically since the airing of its first episode...

The guy missed the point of the rape scenes, they’re all copies of famous and semi-famous movie rape scenes. The satire is still there and still strong, like all satire though it depends on two things: 1 - the viewer recognizing what’s being satired, 2 - the viewer wanting that thing to be satired. The reviewer had problems with step 1, and many many people frequently have problems with step 2 (which is the source of most anti-SP complaints).

My favorite was where Cartman threw a TV running the history channel into the bathtub to go back in history to write his school paper. The speech at the end about a country needing both wimps and heroes was awesome.

I love that show. I didn't care for last week's episode, but their ability to crank out an episode to reflect current events is impressive.

Whilst pushing the limit, it's still pretty funny to see Spielberg and Lucas raping a Storm Trooper.

The Imaginationland 3-part series. Great.

"But we've GOT to have AIDS before we pee in her eye socket!"

I seriously about busted a gut when the bear said that.

It’s nothing new for them to have a few slow episodes, then come up with one as brilliant as direct sunshine must be to someone who’s lived in a cave and hasn’t come out for years.

I was disappointed that Parker and Stone didn’t do a political satire piece this close to an election.

They don’t care if I’m pissed off. That’s the beauty of the show. They don’t care who they piss off. If they piss off everyone than it’s Mission Accomplished.
