Hi fellow Freepers. I did a search and did not find this topic. If you know of a previous post, please redirect.
I've been hogging our Netflix (history, documentary, military genres) and realize the wife and kids need some levity.
Would you all take the time and give me an opinion of what you consider to be the best funny movies you've seen. I'm talking from the silent era of Charlie Chaplin up to the most present ala American Carol.
It doesn't matter if it's dark humor to vulgar humor to Walt Disney. Thanks for your input!
Naked Gun and Airplane as a FReeper already suggested.
Forgot to add, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I watched it on TV the other day when I was sick as a dog, made me feel better within 15 minutes.
Death at a Wedding and The Valet.
older movies:
“Continental Divide” with John Belushi and Blair Brown, 1981 - not well known, but I enjoyed it.
“The Great Outdoors” with John Candy and Dan Ackroyd, 1988. It slayed me.
“The Philadelphia Story” Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart Katherine Hepburn, 1940 - clever wit
“The In-Laws” 1970 version with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin.
If you are looking for family-friendly, you can’t beat “Good Burger”, a little-known film from Nickolodean that features Kenan Thompson (from Saturday Night Live) and Kel Mitchell (from “Mystery Men” another VERY funny family film) as fast-food workers. I’m a movie buff, and this movie is on my top 10 list.
Both Versions: Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House and The Money Pit
The Awful Truth (Irene Dunne and Cary Grant)
To Be or Not to Be (Jack Benny/Carole Lombard version)
A Night at the Opera (The Marx Brothers)
Young Frankenstein
I hate to say it, but what pops into my mind is Booty Call. Overall not a great movie, but the scenes involving the Saran Wrap and the convenience store employees are just insane. I was laughing so hard I had to pause the movie.
The mentioned Mel Brooks of course, although nobody mentioned Spaceballs. Python-related I second, as well as Galaxy Quest.
And then there’s Baseketball. You can’t beat the hospital scenes with the kid. Last request: “Can I have Chelsey Clinton?” “I think you’d have a better chance with Bill.” !!!
Sorry.... “Nickelodeon”
And Thank You for Smoking. Very clever.
BTW, I’m not endorsing the ranking from the snotty Hollyweird AFI but they are all there.

“The Russians Are Coming, The Russians are Coming” is an old favorite of mine.
Auntie Mame
My whole family watches this whenever they’re down in the dumps
And Clerks! Randall rules. You have to see his analysis of the destruction of the Death Star.
Oh yes, “My Cousin Vinny” - very funny. Wish the dialogue were more G-rated.
I second the In-Laws and add another Arkin vehicle (which he also directed), “Fire Sale.” From the author of “Where’s Poppa?” and the only movie to make me literally laugh myself sick. Sadly, Fox has yet to release it to home video in any form.
