Word For The Day, Thursday, Rocktober 9, 2008 - tautology
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 9 October 2008 | secret garden

Posted on 10/09/2008 6:01:23 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

tautology, [taw-tol-uh-jee], noun
1. needless repetition of an idea, esp. in words other than those of the immediate context, without imparting additional force or clearness, as in “widow woman.”
2. an instance of such repetition.
3. Logic. a. a compound propositional form all of whose instances are true, as “A or not A.”
b. an instance of such a form, as “This candidate will win or will not win.”

Example sentence:
Taranto's Best of the Web always includes News of the Tautological.

Etymology:
Origin: 1579, from L.L. tautologia "representation of the same thing" (c.350), from Gk. tautologia, from tautologos "repeating what has been said," from tauto "the same" + -logos "saying," related to legein "to say".

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

someone on the thread seemed to be saying that it would decrease confidence in AIG to have the bigwigs meeting in Motel6’s. Well THAT’S when you do the PR and have a press release saying since we are alive thanks to the taxpayers dime we will forthwith economize in all of our ventures. do people really buy insurance, even on large corporate scale, only from ostentatiously successful salesmen?

a perect example of tautology: Sean Hannity.

i agree it’s necessary to repeat the warnings of Obama, but not every 3 minutes with every caller.

The debate question about whether "health care" is a "right, a privilege, or a responsibility" is an example of a false tautology. The correct answer is NONE OF THE ABOVE. Health care is a good, that can be purchased. To ask whether it is a "right, a privilege, or a responsibility" makes about as much sense as asking whether a high-definition tv is a right or a privilege or a responsibility.

So scuzzy democrat shyster would be a double tautology, or would that be a triple?

I havbe an alternate definition that involves my personal study of Blackfish (Tautog).

Ugly suckers, but they put up a good fight and are really tasty.

Endicott used to be such a great little community.

Even now, the best it has to offer is because of that Italian community.

I like to occasionally go to an italian mass at St. Anthony’s.

Too bad they are dealing with such a bad pollution problem.

Trifecta. A for you. Or should I say AAA, who handled my towing this morning, granted they showed up 15 minutes late after telling me it would take an hour. It’s been a long day and it’s only started.
