SELMA, Ala. (AP)—A national cigar maker has announced it will close its factory in Selma, laying off more than 200 workers.

The company, Altadis USA, is shutting down the plant on Dec. 5.

Plant manager Vlencon Brown told The Selma Times-Journal that the 213 employees will be paid through Dec. 15.

Richard McKenzie, senior vice president of human resources for Altadis, said Nov. 14 is the last production day at the plant, which began making cigars in Selma in 1941.

Employees received notices Tuesday morning. The company cited government regulations, smoking restrictions, rising taxes and a decrease in demand for the blunt-shaped cigar as reasons for the closing.

Altadis is a distributor that owns lots of cigar brands.

Most of the cigars listed here are not manufactured at this plant in Alabama — I believe the brands impacted here would be limited to domestic machine made cigars.

Plus the part that not that many people smoke anymore because they don’t want to die.

The anti- smoking nazis are killing my oxygen bottle business.

My grandfather smoked cigars until he was 94. It wasn’t the cigars that killed him.

If that’s not what you meant, what did you mean?

Good for you, I’ve had 3 people very close to me die horribly as a direct result of smoking. That is what I meant.

Tell that to these folks and their loved ones; George Harrison, R.J. and R.JIII Reynolds, Gracie Allen, Edward R. Murrow, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Babe Ruth, U.S. Grant, Steve McQueen, Errol Flynn, Roger Maris...just to name a few that we’ve all heard of.

That is one of the main reasons tobacco use has decreased...people die from it.

True, and as he pointed out many people freely choose not to smoke because they know it can contribute to cancer and a premature death.

OK, so your comment was emotional, rather than factual. OK, I get it now.

Right, there’s no facts that show people die from smoking or tobacco related causes.

They lived their lives as they chose fit, and died free men.

Which is more than I can say for you.

Define "premature death."

Is there a government edict commanding subjects to live to a pre-approved age?

Or do free people determine the course of their own lives?

many people freely choose

Does irony entirely escape you?
