Columbus Day Observed

US Navy Birthday

National Kick Butt Day

Milton Hershey Died
(1857-1945)

You've seen his name on millions of candy bars. But you probably don't know all the different ways he tried to make life sweeter for others. Milton Hershey was born in Derry Church, Pennsylvania, on September 13, 1857. He moved around a lot as a kid. He went to seven different schools in eight years. He may not have had much schooling, but he did learn a lot about candy. At the age of 15, he went to work for a candy maker in Lancaster.

After several failures, Hershey started his first successful candy business. He did it by making caramels, not his famous chocolate. He created the Lancaster Caramel Company in 1886. Hershey only began to make chocolate to use with his caramels. He started the Hershey Chocolate Company in 1894. His chocolate was so popular that he sold his caramel business by 1900. That was around the same time he began selling the Hershey bar. He created more chocolate delights. Hershey's Kisses rolled off the production lines in 1907. The Hershey bar with almonds soon followed. And those sweet treats are still popular today.

As much as he liked candy, Hershey wanted to help people too. In his hometown he built a factory in 1903. Then Hershey moved his entire company there in 1905. The community renamed the town after him in 1906. Hershey and his wife, Catherine, started a special school for orphan boys in the town. Today the school, now open to girls, continues to give young people in need a free education. Hershey also set up a foundation to help fund education and community activities in the town. He died there on October 13, 1945.

Ironman Competition Day

The White House in 1846

Although George Washington helped to choose the site for the residence while he was president, he never lived at the famous house. Philadelphia had been the country's capital before Congress declared the city of Washington the permanent capital of the United States in 1790.

The cornerstone of the White House was laid on October 13, 1792. Eight years later, John Adams, the second president, and his wife Abigail, moved into the mansion.

(received via email)

A man owned a small farm way out in the country. The Department of Wages claimed he was not paying proper wages to his staff and sent a representative out to interview him. ‘I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,’ demanded the rep.

‘Well,’ replied the farmer, ‘there’s my farm hand who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board. The cook/ housekeeper has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $150 per week plus free room and board.

Then there’s the half-wit. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of whiskey every Saturday night. He also sleeps with my wife occasionally.’

‘That’s the guy I want to talk to...the half-wit...where is he?,’ says the agent.

‘Oh, that would be Me,’ replied the farmer.

Chester’s Pumpkin Patch

I’m goin’ to Chester’s pumpkin patch
I go there every year
It’s voted the best around you know
At least that’s what I hear

There’s a wonderful sprawling farm
With friendly barnyard creatures
Cows, sheep, horses and pigs
But pumpkins are the main feature

There’s a rooster you just have to see
He’s quite handsome with his cone bright red
Horses and goats are there as well
With an array of pumpkins beside a shed

It’s a fabulous place to visit
On a sunny autumn day
Believe me you won’t be sorry
Why, I plan to go today!

Much better than pearls from deep in the sea;
For in the Lord’s Word I take great delight,
And it is my joy each day and each night."
