Have House Republicans stepped into a Democrat trap?

Posted on 09/29/2008 7:39:35 PM PDT by robert david

It is my belief that Republicans in the House have committed a major blunder by voting against today's bailout plan. They have given the Democrats a very large club to batter them with over the next six weeks before the election as the stock market crashes and the economy goes into a tailspin. It is my fear that this will lead to a Democrat landslide in the House and Senate and may even cost John McCain the presidency as Democrats and their big media cohorts blame the Republicans for the crisis.

Republican Representatives should have heeded the words of their leadership under President George Bush and Senator John McCain instead of caving to pressure from their constituents on a subject they do not fully comprehend.Today is a perfect example why the Founders of this country instituted a representative democracy instead of a direct democracy.

The failure of Congress to pass this emergency plan will also be used by the Democrats to paint a picture of Senator McCain and the President as men who are incapable of providing the leadership required to pass even the most important of legislation.

There may not be any way to save the skin of Republicans in the House who are up for reelection, but if we act now and urge our Congressman to support comprehensive economic reform, we may be able to insure the election of John McCain. Anything less, and we could very well be witnessing an Obama presidency, something our country may never recover from.

God, save our country.

Then we must continually remind the 'Rats of the 40% of their congressional members who also voted against this big banking bailout.

Is that really so difficult?

I don't think so. Everyone that if the Dems really wanted this to pass they could do it without a single Repub vote. THAT would have killed the Repubs.

Repubs are in a superior position now but only if they offer a better counter plan. Their plan could be the same except without including foreign banks, bonus limits on execs who choose to take the dough, and omitting the union pension bailout. Would probably be enough to put it over the top

I think we may be looking at the end of the Republican Party and of our country as we know it. Not just for this election cycle. Forever.

I am expecting the people to fully embrace Socialist solutions to the pending collapse of the economy -- which will of course make a terrible situation even worse.

I pray I am wrong and by some miracle our nation will reject Socialism, but it sure looks to me like we are racing down that path full speed ahead.

BZZZT! False premises invalidate your posting. Thanks for playing though, and next time try to get a grip on reality first. The market will not "crash" and the economy will not "tailspin." This is a faux crisis. repeat "Faux"(that means "false" for you all in Rio Linda).

I guess you missed the part where most Americans are against this bailout and wanted the bill to fail. Having the dems painting the republicans as the cause of the failure will only help, not hinder, the republicans in the elections. McCain should get a clue and start standing with the republicans who voted against this monstrosity of a bill.

You havent been listening to ordimnary common people calling into the radio etc...they see the GOP as heros and have NOT lost faith in the ability of our themselves and outr ocuntry to get through this and persevere.

At least until Thursday when I fear Grammy Stretch Pelosi will pop some valium (or be forcibly gagged) make everyone cookies and milk and change their votes...

but if we act now and urge our Congressman to support comprehensive economic reform

um, I think that's why they voted against this legislation..... this legislation is not "comprehensive reform". So passing this legislation instead fighting for "comprehensive reform" would have sealed their fate in November, with a scathing loss......

NO, the Conservatives in the House AVOIDED a poorly laid trap by Pelosi.

See here:

The debacle is all hers, and this pic is worth a thousand words.

We the people know the democraps caused this whole mess. dems made this rope. Let dems hang on it alone.

The republicans did the right thing. They voted down a mess that would have broken our backs.

Even if the R's had voted for this bill, the DEMS with trash-talk them - i.e., Pelosi's rant that couldn't even wait until AFTER the vote.

It matters not that the libs will try to frame and defame conservatives. It only matters that conservatives FRAME THE STORY to the American people. So far, McCain hasn't done a good job of that. And, Obama is out there writing the script.

Hell, Queen Nancy couldn’t even get all her little RAT buddies to vote for this travesty of a bill. Remember she can pass this WITHOUT any Republican votes.

Yep, the $700 billion doesn’t even exist, it’s a promise they can’t keep, bloating a National debt that’s already been a vacuum to a non-existent Social Security fund

They should have voted for socialism and a massive tax increase upon the American people to save RINO McCain's worthless hide? I don't how nationalizing our financial markets is worth winning an election. There's such a thing as keeping one's soul. As Thomas More retorted in Robert Bolt's play, A Man For All Seasons.

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
