Yankees win...Rivera is lights out again. I think Girardi might play everyone...because if the Yankees win tonight it will be their 90th win and a huge poke in the eye of the Sox who now have been getting whooped by them this entire series. Mussina gets first 20 game winning season.

NY Yankees—–$209,081,579
Detroit—–$138,685,197
New York Mets—–$138,293,378

What do they all have in common?

Well, they are big market teams.

Full disclosure: Trajan88 is a die-hard Pinstripe bleeding Yankee fan ;-)

Oddly, I wouldn't mind seeing a little Dodgers vs Botoxes in the World Serious... I'm sure Brian Cashman will not be happy along with The Boss, jr.

Yes, I know - I was there.
I saw it happen in living color.
I watched in shock as they blew their chance at redemption from last year.
Oh well - six months until 2009 season starts.

I know this thread is a couple of days old but I am still pissed about them blowing it AGAIN.

And the thing that is even more unbelievable is that Wilpon has given Omar Minaya a 4 year contract extension after he was the one responsible for putting together this team of choke artists (not to mention a bullpen that is a complete and total disaster). If only I could perform that poorly at my job and get a multimillion dollar contract extension, but then Fred Wilpon isn’t my boss.

I really don’t see how I am going to be able to watch this team again next year. But of course being the glutton for punishment that is required of Mets fans, I will be back watching them shoot themselves in the foot again in April.

I was in a terrible funk last year. It took days to get over the empty feeling. This year? Yes -— but not as bad. I have hope with Manuel and if they can get their pitching problems in line, things should be looking up. Losing Church for so long didn’t help, nor did that terrible constant cross country travel last spring. Yes they made mistakes, but with Jerry, things were looking up -— even with the relief breakdown. I see that Manuel will be offered a contract. Yippee!

I wish I had your optimism about this team but I just don’t see it. Two years in a row now they have folded like a cheap suit when the season was on the line. There is something fundamentally wrong with the makeup of this team that goes way beyond the bullpen (which is garbage). There is no leadership to be seen. No player, or group of players, who goes out there and displays an attitude that says “we cannot be beaten”. No player who will put himself on the line and light a fire under someone’s @$$ when it’s needed. The ‘86 Mets had guys like Dykstra and Backman who played with that special kind of confidence that rubbed off on everyone else, this group has Reyes and Wright whose confidence is nowhere to be seen in crunch time.
Strawberry and Gooden who could carry the team when it was needed. This group has Santana who is exactly the kind of pitcher you want on the mound when facing a must win situation, but all too often the offense backing him up has been nonexistant.
Hernandez and Carter as strong leaders who knew how to win. This team has NO leadership on the field, and no one who seems willing to step up and TAKE that role.

You’re right, last year felt much worse, but it still stings. IMO I think that the Mets will not win a championship with the core that they currently have. I know it may sound crazy, but I would keep Santana and Pelfrey to build a strong rotation around and get rid of everyone else, while re-signing Pedro on the cheap as a long reliever/spot starter. Trade Wright OR Reyes (preferably Reyes) for a couple of prospects and/or a shut down closer. And I never want to see Oliver Perez, Aaron Heilman, or Scott Schoenweis in a Mets uniform again. The end of 2006 put the stench of failure on this team, and judging by how this season ended it is here to stay for many of them which is why I say that this current core (2006-present) is damaged goods. Sell now while you still can.
